As a turn-based strategy main game released in 2010, you guide a civilization from the Stone Age to the future, aiming for victory via science, diplomacy, culture, or conquest. Gameplay involves managing expansion, research, and economics across a hex-based map, featuring an advanced diplomacy system for interacting with rival empires and city-states. Its distinctive feature is the tactical, unit-per-tile combat system, offering varied strategic depth across its extensive content library.
The gameplay loop centers on strategic decision-making across multiple domains: exploration, expansion, exploitation of resources, and extermination (military engagement). Players manage city development, research new technologies on an extensive tech tree, establish trade routes, and engage in diplomacy with rival civilizations, whether they are controlled by the computer or other human players online.
A significant mechanical shift in this installment involves the introduction of hexagonal tile-based combat, moving away from previous square-grid systems. This change emphasizes tactical positioning and unit synergy, as military units now occupy individual tiles on the map, leading to more nuanced battlefield engagements.
Interaction with other world powers is managed through an advanced diplomacy system. Players must navigate complex relationships with both competing civilizations and independent city-states. These city-states offer unique benefits and require careful management through influence and alliances, adding another layer to the strategic landscape beyond direct conflict.
The game distinguishes itself through its focus on detailed, interconnected systems that govern every aspect of national development over millennia. The shift to a hex-based tactical combat system provides a fresh approach to military strategy within the grand strategy framework. Furthermore, the variety of viable paths to victory ensures that players can tailor their approach—focusing on cultural achievements, economic power, or technological superiority—rather than being forced down a singular military path.
Progression is defined by the technology tree, which dictates available units, buildings, and civic options as you advance through historical eras. Simultaneously, players manage their government structure and social policies, which evolve alongside technological milestones, directly impacting national strengths and weaknesses as the game progresses from antiquity to the modern age.
The core experience is supported by a substantial amount of additional content. There are 15 downloadable content (DLC) packs available, alongside two major expansion packs that significantly deepen and alter core mechanics, adding new features, units, and gameplay systems to the base game.
The content of this game is suitable for persons aged 12 years and over only. It contains: Non realistic looking violence towards human characters This game allows the player to interact with other players ONLINE
