Released in 2002, this Main Game is a Role-playing Adventure featuring Turn-based strategy mechanics where you explore the Hoenn region to capture, train, and battle creatures to become the Champion. Its core loop emphasizes exploration and strategic team building, introducing 135 new creatures and more complex training systems than previous entries. The experience is story-focused and features upgraded graphics for its platform.
The gameplay loop centers on exploration, collection, and strategic combat. Players navigate the world, encountering wild creatures that can be captured using specialized items. Once captured, these creatures can be trained to increase their power and learn new abilities. Battles utilize a turn-based system where understanding elemental matchups and team composition is crucial for success.
This installment introduces significant enhancements to the training and battling systems, adding layers of complexity for dedicated players. The campaign is notably longer and more story-focused than previous iterations, weaving a narrative around the player's quest and the machinations of a newly introduced criminal organization seeking to exploit the power of legendary creatures.
A key distinguishing feature of this entry is the introduction of 135 entirely new Pokémon to discover and add to the player's roster, significantly expanding the world's biodiversity. Furthermore, the game features upgraded graphics compared to its predecessors, providing a technically improved visual experience on the Game Boy Advance platform.
The setting of Hoenn is central to the experience. It is a region defined by its vast oceanic presence, encouraging exploration via water travel. The atmosphere balances the traditional spirit of adventure with emerging threats tied to the region's unique lore and the legendary Pokémon that inhabit it.
As a main, standalone title, this game does not feature any downloadable content (DLC) or expansions. All core content is available immediately upon starting the game.
It is worth noting that this specific version has received one subsequent remake, offering a modern reinterpretation of the original adventure.

Play through the original Rubystory with a twist--you can steal trainers' Pokémon. This project was made using the the pokeruby decompilation project, and its source code can be found here: https://github.com/huderlem/pokeruby-thief Rules: 1. Poke Balls, Great Balls, and Ultra Balls are now named Thief Balls, Robber Balls, and Burglar Balls. 2. You can capture trainers' Pokémon using those balls. (Stealing is not allowed in Double Battles.) 3. You cannot capture wild Pokémon. 4. Your Pokémon do not gain experience.

Players begin the game with one Pokémon, and can capture more using Poké Balls. They can also use their Pokémon to battle other Pokémon. When the player encounters a wild Pokémon or is challenged by a trainer to a battle, the screen switches to a turn-based battle screen where the Pokémon fight. During battle, the player may use a move, use an item, switch their active Pokémon, or flee, although fleeing is not an option in battles against trainers. All Pokémon have hit points (HP); when a Pokémon's HP is reduced to zero, it faints and cannot battle until it is revived. If the player's Pokémon defeats the opposing Pokémon (causes it to faint), it receives experience points. After accumulating enough experience points, it will level up; most Pokémon evolve into a new species of Pokémon when they reach a certain level.

During your adventure, you will battle Team Magma in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Team Aqua in Pokémon Alpha Sapphire. Team Magma seeks to increase the land, while Team Aqua wishes to increase the seas. In order to bring about these grand plans, each will turn to the power of a Legendary Pokémon: Groudon or Kyogre. Team Magma pursues Groudon, while Team Aqua goes after Kyogre. What could be driving them to such lengths?
