Final Fantasy XI R was a remake of the 2002 MMORPG Final Fantasy XI for mobile devices. Originally announced in 2015, its release window of 2016 had long come and gone, and with no word on the title's development. It continued to be listed under Nexon's upcoming games for years, but no news was heard on its development aside from images leaked in 2018. In late 2020, rumours circulated that it had been cancelled, and it disappeared from Nexon's upcoming games list. An official announcement was made in early 2021 that the project had been shelved. According to IGN's article, Nexon and Square Enix "decided the mobile version didn't meet the creative standards Final Fantasy fans have come to expect from the series".

Final Fantasy XI: The Voracious Resurgence is an episodic story series update to Final Fantasy XI that began release in 2020. Like add-ons previously released for the game, the story series is introduced as part of a regular version updates. Unlike those add-ons, The Voracious Resurgence does not require an additional purchase to access.

Released across the May, August, and November 2015 version updates, Rhapsodies of Vana'diel is designed to be the conclusion of the main scenario missions of Final Fantasy XI, tying together plotlines and characters from across the game's previous stories. Completing the missions requires registration of and progression through all previous expansion packs. Other additions include the new areas Escha and Reisenjima and new trusts.

Final Fantasy XI: Seekers of Adoulin is the fifth full expansion pack for Final Fantasy XI, and the first full expansion for Final Fantasy XI in over 5 years after Wings of the Goddess. Seekers of Adoulin is set in the western continent of Ulbuka and features new jobs, story, areas, quests and gameplay systems. PlayStation 2 support for Seekers of Adoulin is only available in Japan. Although Square Enix is not dropping PlayStation 2 support for Final Fantasy XI as a whole, Seekers of Adoulin content will not be accessible on Final Fantasy XI for PlayStation 2 outside of Japan.

Wings of the Goddess (アルタナの神兵 Arutana no Shinpei, lit. "Divine Soldiers of Altana") is the fourth expansion of Final Fantasy XI was announced on May 12, 2007 at the Square Enix Party event in Japan. The expansion shipped for PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 on November 20; the PC version was delayed until November 21 due to manufacturing issues. The expansion went live and became playable on November 22, 2007. On November 20, 2007, Square Enix updated Final Fantasy XI in preparation for the expansion. This update included a new large-scale battle known as "Campaign" and various new spells and job abilities. The Dancer and Scholar jobs were introduced in the expansion, and their equipment known as "artifact armor" was released in the March 10, 2008, update.
