As a foundational Real Time Strategy (RTS) game released in 1995, you manage base building, resource gathering, and tactical unit deployment in the Second War between the Orcs and the Human Alliance. This sequel significantly enhances the original by introducing naval and air units, demanding new strategic approaches. Key features include improved graphics, sound, and robust multiplayer supporting up to eight players, offering deep competitive skirmishes across DOS, PC, and console platforms.
The atmosphere is one of high-stakes conflict as the survivors of the initial war flee across the sea to the human kingdom of Lordaeron. The Orcs pursue relentlessly, aiming to conquer this new territory. The narrative follows the escalating confrontation, where both the Alliance and the Horde acquire new strategic assets, notably including naval and air units, alongside more potent spellcasting units. The story follows the ebb and flow of the war, from initial Orc successes to the eventual pushback by the Alliance forces, culminating in pivotal battles that determine the fate of Azeroth.
As a classic RTS experience, the gameplay centers on resource gathering, base construction, and tactical unit management in real time. Players must establish and expand their operational bases to produce the necessary infrastructure for troop training and technological advancement. A key element of this installment is the expanded unit roster, which mandates strategic adaptation. Mastering the use of new units, such as ships for sea control and flying units for aerial superiority, is essential for achieving victory across the diverse campaign maps.
The successor introduced substantial improvements over its predecessor in several key areas. Graphics and sound fidelity saw notable upgrades, enhancing the overall presentation. However, the most significant enhancement for many players was the vastly improved multiplayer functionality. This allowed for skirmishes involving up to eight participants, dramatically increasing the replayability and strategic depth available when facing human opponents.
The core experience is self-contained, with no official downloadable content (DLC) released for the main game. However, the game did receive one official expansion pack, which further broadens the scope of the conflict and introduces new units and scenarios to the established framework.
This strategy title was ported across several major systems of its era, ensuring accessibility on DOS, PC (Microsoft Windows), Sega Saturn, and PlayStation, alongside Mac versions.

Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal is an expansion pack for Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness. Beyond the Dark Portal contains two 12 map campaigns; one for each side, 50 new pud's (maps) and a new tile set for the Orc home world. It also contains 5 new hero characters for each side that actively participate in several of the new single player missions. In function, they are simply super powered versions of standard units that have different sounds. There are no new standard units however, which many saw as a disappointment. The map editor also isn't updated to include any of this expansion's new features, though third party programs exist that can add these features to the editor.
