Total War: Rome Remastered is a strategy title blending turn-based campaign management with real-time 3D battles set in Ancient Rome. You manage diplomacy, economy, and troop recruitment on the strategic map, then command units directly in tactical combat. This 2021 remaster updates the 2004 classic with 4K visuals and gameplay refinements while preserving the core experience, including the Alexander and Barbarian Invasion DLC content.
On the strategic layer, players manage their chosen faction across an accurate map of ancient Europe, North Africa, and the Near East. This involves recruiting and training diverse military units, developing cities through construction projects, advancing technological research, and engaging in complex diplomacy with rival powers. Success hinges on balancing economic stability, managing public order, and positioning armies effectively to seize territory from competing factions.
When armies clash on the campaign map, the game transitions to detailed, real-time 3D land battles. Players assume direct control over individual units—including infantry, cavalry, and siege equipment—issuing commands for movement, formation changes, and attacks. Mastering unit synergy and terrain is crucial for achieving victory against numerically superior or strategically positioned opponents.
This version significantly updates the classic experience, featuring a complete visual overhaul, including support for 4K resolution. Beyond graphical fidelity, the remaster incorporates numerous gameplay refinements aimed at modernizing the user experience while preserving the core mechanics of the original 2004 title. These improvements include updated UI/UX elements and modern platform support across PC (Microsoft Windows), Mac, and Linux.
The purchase of this remastered edition is comprehensive, including the original base game alongside two historically significant expansion packs that were previously sold separately:
Beyond the main campaign, which allows players to choose from various historical factions (with some becoming available only after being defeated in-game), players have several other ways to experience the conflict:
The core strategic depth and the dual turn-based/real-time gameplay loop that defined the original 2004 title remain entirely intact. This remaster is designed to be faithful to the original structure, focusing on modernizing the presentation and accessibility rather than fundamentally altering the strategic direction or unit balance.
Strong violence occurs during battle sequences. Human characters can be killed using a variety of weapons, such as swords, spears and bows and arrows. Large numbers of soldiers can be also killed by the firing of ballistic weapons. While much of the violence is unrealistic, occurring in a 3D map environment, there is a strong focus on violence. Violence is depicted more realistically in the cut scenes, although blood is not shown. There are some audio effects of violence, including the sounds of weapons slashing and piercing bodies, as well as cries from the injured. While the majority of violence involves human characters, animals may also be killed, including pigs which can be set alight and sent into enemy ranks.
