The experience is presented as a third-person action-adventure, utilizing polygonal characters set against pre-rendered backgrounds, complete with cinematic camera angles that heighten tension. While retaining the foundational engine and structure of its predecessors, this installment introduces several key mechanical improvements designed to enhance player control during intense encounters.
Players benefit from updated controls, including the introduction of auto-targeting for quicker engagement, a responsive 180-degree spin for rapid repositioning, and a dedicated dodge move allowing Jill to actively evade incoming enemy attacks. Resource management, exploration, and puzzle-solving remain central pillars of the survival horror formula.
This main game title was made available across several platforms, including PC (Microsoft Windows), Dreamcast, PlayStation 3, Nintendo GameCube, PlayStation Portable, and the original PlayStation console.
The game does not feature any official downloadable content (DLC) or standalone expansions. However, certain versions offer unlockable content based on performance. Specifically, the PC and Dreamcast releases include all eight of Jill's possible costumes from the start, along with the "Operation Mad Jackal" mini-game, where players can take control of one of three Umbrella soldiers. On the PlayStation version, these special features must be unlocked by achieving a high score upon completion of the main game.
Beyond the mechanical refinements, the game is defined by its relentless pursuit mechanic. The atmosphere is constantly pressurized by the presence of an unrelenting, intelligent pursuer that stalks the player throughout Raccoon City. This element forces players to constantly adapt their strategies, balancing exploration and combat preparedness against the need to flee immediate danger.
It is important to note that this 1999 title has received one full remake, offering a modern interpretation of the story and gameplay experience.

Resident Evil 3: The Only One starts out as a remake of Resident Eevil 3, with a black screen and a dialogue between Jill and Brad. Something is chasing Jill, and after the first dialogue, an explosion occurs in your apartment (different from the original) and takes you to the streets of Raccoon where you'll meet the creature that's been chasing you for the first time. Jill will have to find a way to get rid of that creature while she travels through a city where only entrails and the smell of rotting corpses have their place.

Players will spend most of their time playing as Jill Valentine, although on some occasions they will assume the role of Carlos Oliveira, giving him more screen time as a deuteragonist.
