This 2020 release is a modern remake of the 1999 survival horror classic, shifting the perspective to an over-the-shoulder third-person view. You play primarily as Jill Valentine, navigating the T-Virus outbreak in Raccoon City while being relentlessly pursued by a powerful entity. Gameplay blends tense resource management with modern shooter mechanics, including a crucial dodge ability. The experience updates the original pacing and visuals, featuring expanded segments where you control Carlos Oliveira, offering a modernized, action-oriented take on the desperate escape narrative.
This remake shifts the perspective from the fixed camera angles of the original to an over-the-shoulder third-person view, aligning its moment-to-moment action with contemporary third-person shooters while retaining core survival horror elements like resource management and puzzle-solving. While the core narrative of escape remains, the game features significant updates to pacing and environmental design compared to its 1999 predecessor.
Players primarily control Jill Valentine, but the experience is supplemented by segments where control shifts to Carlos Oliveira, a member of the Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service (U.B.C.S.). This dual perspective offers varied gameplay scenarios and expands the narrative focus on the city's fall.
The story centers on Jill Valentine's desperate bid for survival as the T-Virus plague consumes Raccoon City. Her efforts to expose Umbrella's culpability are hampered by internal resistance and the overwhelming zombie threat. Adding to the peril is the introduction of an immensely powerful, relentless pursuer dispatched specifically to eliminate her, creating constant tension throughout the journey.
The modernization focuses heavily on fluidity and intensity. Key gameplay mechanics have been overhauled to support faster movement and more direct combat engagement. A notable addition is the Dodge mechanic, allowing players a brief window to evade incoming attacks, which is crucial when facing the game’s most persistent threat. While the core structure of exploring dangerous environments and managing limited inventory is preserved, the pacing is generally faster and more action-oriented than the original title.
