As a Real Time Strategy and Turn-based Strategy main title released in 2010, you command massive armies across Europe during the Napoleonic Wars. The gameplay blends grand strategic map management with intense, real-time tactical battles where unit positioning is key. You follow the career of a legendary general across two decades of conflict, culminating in battles like Waterloo. The game is available on PC and Mac and features focused historical campaigns.
The game merges deep, turn-based strategic elements on a campaign map with real-time tactical battles. On the strategic layer, players manage economies, diplomacy, and troop movements across Europe, planning the long-term course of their nation's involvement in the Napoleonic Wars. When armies meet, the game transitions to detailed, real-time tactical combat where positioning, unit morale, and flanking maneuvers are critical to victory.
The atmosphere captures the scale and intensity of early 19th-century warfare. Battles feature massive troop numbers and historically inspired units, demanding careful management of formations and artillery placement to overcome the opposition.
A defining feature is the narrative focus on a specific historical arc. Whether commanding the titular general or facing him across the battlefield, the game provides a focused, story-driven campaign structure rarely seen in broader strategy titles of this scope. The tactical battles themselves are renowned for their complexity and the sheer visual spectacle of large-scale engagements unfolding in real-time.
This main title is available for play on PC (Microsoft Windows) and Mac platforms. Beyond the core experience, the game has received 4 downloadable content (DLC) packs, which introduce additional scenarios, units, or campaign variations to extend the strategic possibilities.
The game aims to present the strategic and tactical challenges faced during this period of European history. Players must adapt their strategies to the specific strengths and weaknesses of the armies and technologies available during the early 1800s, making historical context integral to success in both the turn-based and real-time phases of play.

The Peninsular Campaign Downloadable Content is a new and independent campaign for Napoleon: Total War based on the conflict in the Spanish Peninsula between 1811 and 1814. It was during this era that the Spanish resistance gave their style of fighting its name: Guerrilla, or the “little war”. It is 1811 and the war in the Spanish Peninsula has been raging for over two years, with mixed fortunes and heavy casualties for both sides. Following the withdrawal from the Madrid area of the combined armies of Great Britain, Portugal and Spain after the Battle of Talavera in July 1809, Viscount Wellington retreated into Portugal and consolidated his forces. Now Napoleon’s Armée d'Espagne, has invaded Portugal once again but thus far the network of entrenchments has proved impossible for the French to successfully assail. Wellington has planned a fresh offensive to drive the invaders out of Portugal and eventually out of the Peninsula altogether. Although forced back to the edges of their Peninsula by France and the traitors who helped them, Spain is not yet out of the fight. The Supreme Central Junta and its successor the Supreme Regency authorised the forming of local bands to fight guerrilla - the “little war” - against the invaders. Choose one of the three nations involved - France, Great Britain or Spain - and experience one the most intense conflict of the Napoleonic era.
