This 2013 hack and slash adventure follows Raiden, a cyborg ninja, as he uses his High Frequency blade in a world of private military conflicts. The core gameplay loop centers on fast-paced combat featuring the unique "Blade Mode," which lets you slow time to precisely slice enemies and objects into countless pieces. The PC version includes all DLC missions and customization options, allowing players to replay cutscenes or boss fights, appealing to fans of high-octane action mechanics.
This title is a fast-paced, action-adventure game that shifts the focus of its renowned franchise into high-octane combat. Released initially in 2013 for consoles and later for PC and Mac, the game centers on Raiden, a cyborg ninja who utilizes a High Frequency katana blade. The atmosphere is dark and technologically advanced, placing the player in the role of a highly capable operative working for Private Military and Security Companies (PMSCs) in a politically volatile setting, until he encounters a mysterious force commanding similar cyborg warriors.
The central appeal of this game lies in its unique combat system, which emphasizes precise cutting and strategic dismemberment. Players engage in intense hack and slash encounters against numerous robotic and cyborg enemies. The primary gameplay loop involves navigating linear, mission-based stages, engaging in fluid melee combat, and utilizing environmental traversal.
The defining feature is the Blade Mode, which allows Raiden to slow down time and precisely target specific sections of an enemy or object. This mechanic is crucial for both combat efficiency—allowing players to sever limbs or vital components—and for environmental interaction. The ability to slice virtually anything into hundreds of pieces based on player input provides a distinct level of mechanical depth to the action genre.
The integration of this precise cutting mechanic into the flow of combat separates it from standard beat 'em ups. Success often relies not just on timing attacks, but on utilizing Blade Mode to exploit enemy weaknesses or to execute specific maneuvers for resource recovery.
The narrative follows Raiden after his transformation into a cyborg, exploring his path through a world grappling with the privatization of warfare and the ethics of cybernetic enhancement. He is contracted for various security duties until he confronts a mysterious force commanding cyborgs like himself. The story delves into themes of vengeance and identity as Raiden confronts powerful adversaries who challenge his new existence. The game features cinematic storytelling sequences that drive the plot forward between intense action sequences.
For those playing on PC, the release included significant additions over the original console launch. This version bundles all three substantial downloadable content missions: Blade Wolf, Jetstream, and the VR Missions. Furthermore, the PC version provides access to several cosmetic and functional body upgrades for Raiden, such as the White Armor, Inferno Armor, Commando Armor, his appearance from MGS4, and the classic Cyborg Ninja body.
To enhance replay value, the PC version introduced several quality-of-life features accessible from the main menu. Players can now view all previously unlocked cutscenes and codec conversations independently. A dedicated option allows users to replay only the boss battles, and a specific setting named "ZANGEKI" provides control over the amount of cuts allowed during gameplay, offering a customizable level of destructive feedback.

Blade Wolf is the second story DLC for Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Initially a commercial release, it was made available for free around the time of the PC version's release, where it was included by default. It is a separate story campaign with Blade Wolf as the protagonist, a boss for Raiden in the original game. It is a robot wolf with a chainsaw on its back who originally worked for Mistral. The campaign is set prior to the encounter with Raiden at Abkhazia in the original game and the story is told as a flashback. Just like the first DLC most of the environments are reused from the original game, most notably R-01.

Jetstream is the first story DLC for Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Initially a commercial release, it was made available for free around the time of the PC version's release, where it was included by default. It is a separate story campaign with Samuel 'Jetstream' Rodrigues as the protagonist, a boss for Raiden in the original game.

Push Raiden’s Cyborg body to its limits with 30 all-new VR/Virtual Reality missions, featuring that classic VR look inspired by the original Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions.
