Released in 2011, this puzzle-platformer adventure is marketed as a "Platform for Games," emphasizing user-generated content. You guide Sackboy through a story where an entity called the Negativitron threatens Craftworld, forcing you to join "The Alliance." Core gameplay involves running and jumping, enhanced by new tools for complex level traversal and puzzle-solving. Its distinctive feature is a powerful creation suite, allowing players to build and share entirely new game types, with full backwards compatibility for content from the original title.
The narrative picks up after the events of the first game, plunging the whimsical world of Craftworld into peril. An ominous, inter-dimensional vacuum cleaner known as the Negativitron appears, threatening to consume all inhabitants, including Sackboy. To combat this existential threat, Sackboy is rescued by Larry Da Vinci, the leader of a clandestine organization called "The Alliance." Players join this group, undertaking missions to gather allies and resources, including a newly developed army of Sackbots created by Victoria Von Bathysphere, in a bid to defeat the Negativitron before it destroys their world.
The most defining feature of this sequel is its radical expansion of creation tools, transforming the experience from a simple platformer into a comprehensive game creation suite. While the main story mode offers a polished, linear adventure through various imaginative levels, the true depth lies in the ability for players to design, build, and share their own interactive experiences. The game is 100% backwards compatible, meaning all user-created content from the original title can be imported and utilized within this new engine.
As a platformer, the fundamental mechanics involve running, jumping, and navigating intricate environments. However, the sequel introduces a robust set of new tools and gadgets that drastically alter traversal and puzzle-solving. These additions allow for much more complex interactions with the environment and are central to both the story levels and the user-generated content.
The creation suite is significantly enhanced, offering deeper logic tools, new material types, and advanced scripting capabilities. This allows creators to build not just platforming stages, but entirely new genres of games—from racing simulations to complex adventure modules—all within the game's engine. The community aspect remains vital, facilitating the sharing and playing of these diverse creations.
Beyond the main game, players have access to downloadable content to further expand their experience. There are 5 published DLC packages available for this title, offering new costumes, level kits, and tools to enhance both playing and creating.
