This 2012 main game is an action-adventure platformer where you play as DC Super Heroes, including Batman, Robin, and Superman, teaming up to stop Lex Luthor and the Joker from destroying Gotham. Gameplay centers on exploring levels, solving puzzles by switching between heroes to use their unique abilities (like flight or gadgets), and engaging in light combat within LEGO environments. A defining feature is the extensive roster of playable DC Super Heroes, necessitating teamwork to uncover secrets and advance. Players must frequently swap between characters to chain abilities:
Combat is generally straightforward, involving basic button presses to dismantle opponents constructed from LEGO bricks. The game emphasizes exploration within its hub world, which expands as story objectives are met, encouraging players to revisit areas once new powers are acquired.
This installment is historically significant within the franchise for being the first to incorporate fully voiced dialogue for all characters, moving beyond the silent, pantomime style of earlier entries. This change significantly alters the presentation of the story and character interactions. Furthermore, the integration of major Justice League members alongside the core Batman characters substantially broadens the mechanical variety available for puzzle-solving and exploration.
The adventure is set primarily in and around Gotham City, which functions as a large, explorable hub area connecting the various narrative missions. The tone successfully merges the serious stakes of superhero conflict with the humorous, block-based aesthetic characteristic of the LEGO game series. The central conflict involves the assembled heroes working to neutralize a coordinated threat orchestrated by major antagonists.

The handheld versions of LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes (the sequel to LEGO Batman: The Videogame) retain the same storyline as their home console cousins, in which Batman and Robin must team up with characters from the DC Universe (including Superman, Green Lantern, The Flash and Wonder Woman among others) to save Gotham City from the newly-formed alliance of The Joker and Lex Luthor. These versions include 14 levels in which players must help the Dynamic Duo (along with the Justice League in later stages) collect studs, defeat enemies and interact with numerous objects in an open-world environment akin to the home console editions. After completing the main storyline, there are additional missions to carry out with the Justice League to unlock 5 extra characters within the Batcomputer. Minikit pieces collected will unlock a new character (one for each), Red Bricks unlock abilities in the Extras menu and Sound Bites (introduced in this game and consist of blue musical notes) contain mini-vocal dialogue from certain characters. The Touch Screen for 3DS and DS consoles is utilised to select characters, choose the character's current abilities and to choose a character to play as at anytime (only used for Free Play), while the action takes place on the Top Screen. In contrast, all the action takes place on the PS Vita's single screen. The handheld versions also save current level progress made and can be accessed at any time from the Load Game screen.
