As a foundational Main Game shooter released in 1979, Galaxian places you in control of a starship defending the screen's base against descending alien formations. The core loop involves horizontal movement and rapid firing to eliminate these color-coded enemy waves, which execute synchronized, dynamic attack patterns, including swooping dives. This arcade classic is distinct for introducing more complex enemy behavior than earlier titles in the genre, demanding precise reflexes to survive successive, increasingly aggressive waves.
This is a classic arcade shooter, originally released in 1979, that established a foundational template for the space combat genre. Players take control of a lone starfighter positioned at the bottom of the screen, tasked with defending against relentless waves of alien invaders descending from above. The atmosphere is one of pure, focused, high-stakes aerial combat against an organized, colorful enemy fleet.
The primary objective revolves around precise aiming and rapid-fire action. You maneuver your ship horizontally across the lower portion of the screen, utilizing a single cannon to destroy incoming enemy formations. These formations are the defining feature of the experience; the alien ships attack in distinct, color-coded groups that move in synchronized, often complex patterns as they approach your position.
A key element of the challenge involves recognizing and prioritizing targets. Certain enemy types possess unique attack patterns or move with greater speed, demanding quick reflexes from the pilot. Successfully clearing an entire wave results in the appearance of a new, often more aggressive, formation.
While sharing the vertical shooting perspective common to its era, this title introduced significant advancements in enemy behavior and visual presentation. Unlike earlier, more rigid patterns, the enemy formations here exhibit more dynamic movement, including swooping dives and coordinated maneuvers designed to overwhelm the player's defenses. The visual variety provided by the different colored enemy squadrons also added a layer of tactical differentiation to the combat.
This main game debuted exclusively on the Arcade platform in September 1979. As a self-contained experience, its focus remains entirely on the core challenge presented in the original arcade cabinet.
There are currently no downloadable content packs or expansions associated with this original release. The game remains focused on its core, definitive arcade experience, though it has seen subsequent remakes over the years.
For those interested in the history of the shooter genre, this game represents a pivotal moment in arcade history. Its influence is evident in subsequent titles, and it continues to be appreciated for its demanding, pattern-based action and foundational design principles.

"Galaxian" is a shooting game released by Namco in 1979. You control a Galaxip and shoot aliens that approach you in eerie curves. Aliens during the assault double your score, and the flagship (Galboss) can be shot at in turn, starting with the escort (red alien), for a higher score. Deftly dodge enemy aliens and destroy the large formation.

The great quarter-muncher makes its way to personal computers!

A Port for Atari 2600, Galaxian expanded on the formula pioneered by Space Invaders. As in the earlier game, Galaxian featured a horde of attacking aliens that exchanged shots with the player. In contrast to Space Invaders, Galaxian added an element of drama by having the aliens periodically make kamikaze-like dives at the player's ship, the Galaxip.
