Final Fantasy XIV Online is a massively multiplayer online RPG, relaunched in 2013, where you explore the realm of Eorzea against threats like the Garlean Empire. The core gameplay involves cooperative questing, battling familiar monsters, and deep character progression. A distinctive feature is the ability to switch between all combat roles—tank, healer, or damage dealer—simply by changing your equipped weapon. The experience is continuously updated via major narrative expansions, offering ongoing adventure across PC and console platforms.
This is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) that invites players to step into the expansive and ever-evolving world of Eorzea. Launched in 2013, this title serves as the definitive relaunch of the franchise's online presence, building upon the legacy of classic role-playing elements while delivering a vast, persistent online adventure.
Players begin their journey in a realm embraced by gods and forged by heroes, currently under threat from the aggressive Garlean Empire. The core premise centers on an ancient terror, Bahamut, whose reawakening led to a cataclysm. Heroes from the past were sent into a temporal rift to await the moment they were needed again. Players assume the role of these awakened heroes, tasked with helping to reforge the fate of Eorzea through epic quests and critical narrative developments.
The gameplay loop centers on exploration, character progression, and cooperative engagement with other players worldwide. As a Role-Playing Game (RPG), it features deep systems for character development, allowing players to master various disciplines and vocations.
A distinctive feature is the flexibility in character roles. Players are not locked into a single class; instead, they can change their combat role simply by equipping different primary weapons. This allows a single character to seamlessly transition between roles such as a damage dealer (DPS), a healer, or a tank, offering significant versatility in party composition and solo play.
The world of Eorzea is rich with activities. Players can undertake main scenario quests that drive the overarching narrative, participate in challenging dungeons and raids against familiar monsters from the series' history, and engage in side content ranging from crafting and gathering to exploring diverse environments.
Social interaction is central to the experience. Players can forge friendships, join Free Companies (guilds), travel using iconic mounts like Chocobos, and utilize airships for transportation across the realm. The game emphasizes creating unique, shared stories within the persistent online setting.
This title is available across a wide array of modern and legacy platforms, including PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, PC (Microsoft Windows), Xbox Series X|S, and Mac, ensuring broad accessibility for prospective adventurers.
While the base game remains the foundation, the experience is significantly expanded through substantial, narrative-driven expansions. Currently, the game features five major expansions that introduce new zones, storylines, job classes, and high-level challenges, ensuring a continuous stream of new content for long-term players. The structure relies on these large-scale packages rather than smaller, traditional downloadable content (DLC) packs.
Advice for consumers This game has received a PEGI 16 because it features realistic violence towards human-like characters and prominent use of tobacco. Not suitable for persons under 16 years of age. Brief outline of the game Travel the world, improving your character by completing the quests in order to save Eorzea from invasion by the Garlean Empire. Content specific issues Violence is mostly of a mild nature with characters taking part in turn based battles showing little injury, but there are more graphic sequences in the cut scenes with violence becoming more realistic. There are also scenes showing characters gaining the Protect benefit from smoking a pipe. Other issues This game offers players the opportunity to purchase in-game items in the form of DLC expansions which some parents or carers may want to be aware of. Parents, carers or other responsible adults should check to see what is being offered before making any purchase on behalf of a child. It should be noted that the game can still be played without the need to purchase such items.
