As an open-world Role-Playing Shooter released in 2015, you emerge from Vault 111 as the Sole Survivor into a post-nuclear Boston wasteland, driven by the search for your kidnapped son. Gameplay blends real-time combat with deep character progression via the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system. A distinctive feature is the comprehensive settlement building mechanic, allowing players to scavenge and construct functional communities. Choices made regarding various factions directly shape the future of the Commonwealth.
The atmosphere is defined by retro-futuristic aesthetics clashing with brutal survivalism. The world is littered with the remnants of 1950s American optimism, now twisted by radiation and decay. Players navigate crumbling cities, irradiated swamps, and hidden underground bunkers. The environment itself presents constant challenges, forcing players to manage resources, radiation exposure, and threats from mutated creatures and hostile human factions.
As a hybrid Shooter and Role-Playing Game (RPG), gameplay balances visceral first-person or third-person combat with deep character progression. A central feature is the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system, which governs character attributes and unlocks a vast array of perks, allowing for highly specialized character builds, whether focusing on stealth, heavy weaponry, or charismatic negotiation.
Beyond traditional exploration and questing, a defining feature is the comprehensive settlement building mechanic. Players can scavenge materials from the environment to construct and manage their own thriving settlements. This involves designing defensive structures, establishing trade routes, setting up power grids, and attracting settlers who rely on the player for protection and resources. This system allows players to actively rebuild and customize large sections of the Wasteland.
Combat utilizes a real-time shooting system augmented by the V.A.T.S. (Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System), which allows players to pause the action to target specific enemy body parts with tactical precision. Exploration is non-linear; the massive world map is dense with points of interest, hidden lore, and optional dungeons waiting to be discovered.
This main title is available across modern and last-generation consoles, including PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC (Microsoft Windows). The initial release has been supplemented by six significant downloadable content packages, offering new locations, equipment, and gameplay features to expand the core experience.
The narrative is driven by player agency. As the Sole Survivor interacts with the various groups vying for control of the Commonwealth—ranging from technologically advanced remnants to zealous religious orders—the player must navigate complex moral gray areas. These choices directly influence the political landscape and determine which factions survive, ultimately leading to multiple distinct end-game scenarios.
This game is rated PEGI 18 which restricts availability to ADULTS ONLY and is not suitable for anyone below this age. This rating has been given due to frequent strong violence.

On the day of the Great War, the residents of Salem made their way to the shelter of Vault 4. Only those registered in the vault programme were granted entrance. Some refugees reasoned that if they could wait out the twenty-year closure period, which Vault-Tec had advertised, then they would be able to find shelter when the vault opened. More than two-hundred years later the town had changed a lot. A town grew up inside the cave outside the vault, its houses made from reclaimed Vault-Tec equipment and built into the walls of the cave which have been dug out as generations of residents tried to get inside the vault. When the Sole Survivor arrives at Fourville the town is in the middle of an election where the vault has become a major point of contention. The town's incumbent mayor believes the vault will open one day, and has made this the focal point of his campaign. His challenger believes the vault is holding the town back and attempts to get inside should be abandoned. The Sole Survivor's involvement can shift the scale and change the face of the community forever.
