War Thunder is raising the stakes with the "Nuclear Thunder" event, a limited-time mode running from April 1st to April 13th that introduces strategic bombers and the long-awaited debut of Anti-Radiation Missiles (ARMs).
The event takes place on the new Tropical Coast map and features a unique three-tier escalation system. Players aren't just fighting for capture points; they are building toward a total strategic victory. The gameplay loop evolves from standard tactical engagements to the deployment of tactical nukes (up to 30 kt), culminating in the ability to field massive strategic bombers like the American B-52H and the Soviet Tu-95M. These behemoths carry payloads up to 1.6 Mt, capable of ending a match by vaporizing the enemy airbase entirely.
Perhaps the most significant mechanical shift is the introduction of Anti-Radiation Missiles (ARMs), including the AGM-88A HARM, Kh-58U, and Kh-25MPU. These weapons are designed specifically to hard-counter AA systems by homing in on radar emissions. For pilots who have struggled against high-tier SAM sites, this is a massive change in the meta, offering a dedicated tool to suppress enemy air defenses and clear the way for the heavy hitters.
Participation in the event allows players to unlock the B-52H and Tu-95M by completing six distinct stages. It is important to note that while these aircraft are iconic additions to the hangar, their nuclear capabilities are restricted to this specific event mode and will not carry over into regular tech tree battles. You have until 11:00 GMT on April 13th to complete the stages and master the new SEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses) tactics.
