Paradox Development Studio has pulled back the curtain on the new Trade System, and it is far more than just a passive gold modifier. Built around more than 900 individual Markets based on de jure duchies, the system introduces 40+ unique goods and complex mercantile mechanics that will fundamentally change how you fund your wars and secure your dynasty's future.
The heart of this update lies in Trade Routes. Unlike temporary modifiers, these routes generate persistent physical effects on the map, such as roads. If you maintain these routes effectively, they improve travel speed and safety—a massive boon for rulers who frequently lead armies or travel for tournaments. For those playing as Republics or dedicated Merchants, the goal is to run Profit Routes, mastering the art of buying low in surplus markets and selling high where demand is peaked.
One of the most interesting additions is Trade Expertise. This isn't a temporary buff; it is a legacy that persists across successions. Your dynasty can become synonymous with specific primary goods, allowing you to dominate entire categories of commerce. If you're feeling particularly ruthless, you can even establish Monopolies. While a standard monopoly lets you lock down surplus goods, an exploitative monopoly allows you to seize goods even when local demand isn't met, potentially squeezing your subjects for every last coin.
For most landed rulers, you'll be relying on internal Merchants to fulfill your realm's needs, but the strategic depth comes in how you interact with these mercantile powers. Do you protect the roads and foster growth, or do you tax them into submission? With the Silk & Silver expansion, the choice between being a warrior king or a merchant prince has never been more distinct.
