Zaxxon, a foundational 1982 arcade shooter, tasks you with flying an isometric fighter craft through a hostile fortress to destroy targets. The core loop involves maximizing your score while managing fuel, which is uniquely replenished by shooting specific fuel drums. Its distinctive feature is the pioneering pseudo-3D isometric perspective, offering depth perception in fast-paced aerial combat across numerous classic home systems.
The atmosphere of the game is one of high-stakes military engagement within a futuristic fortress environment. Players pilot their ship through corridors and open areas, engaging in constant combat against incoming enemy fire and various aerial threats.
The primary objective is survival and maximizing the score by destroying as many targets as possible. Fuel management is a critical mechanic; running out of fuel results in mission failure. Intriguingly, fuel can be replenished by successfully destroying specific targets within the environment, adding a layer of risk-reward strategy to the action.
A defining characteristic of this title is its use of an isometric projection. This viewpoint provides a pseudo-three-dimensional look at the action, allowing players to perceive depth and plan their attack vectors in a way that differed significantly from traditional top-down or side-scrolling shooters of the era. This visual presentation was a major technical achievement at the time of its release.
The gameplay loop involves continuous movement, precise aiming, and tactical maneuvering to avoid enemy projectiles while simultaneously targeting hostile entities and crucial fuel depots.
As a main game title originating in 1982, this release does not feature any cataloged downloadable content (DLC), expansions, remakes, or remasters. The experience remains true to its original design across the numerous platforms it was ported to.
The game saw a wide release across numerous systems, demonstrating its broad appeal in the early 1980s. Key platforms include the original Arcade hardware, Atari 8-bit computers, Commodore 64/128, ColecoVision, SG-1000, ZX Spectrum, MSX, TRS-80 Color Computer, Atari 5200, and DOS systems. It also saw a later release on the Wii.

A Port of Zaxxon for Atari 2600 and Intellivision. This version of the game uses a third person perspective as opposed to the isometric view of the original arcade game.

The handheld version of Zaxxon is a portable LCD game manufactured by Bandai with a license from Sega. It was released in 1982, and is based on the arcade game, Zaxxon. This system uses a "double panel" LCD screen, one to simulate the first section of the game (set in space) and another for one of the space stations. Aside from a similar perspective, handheld Zaxxon is very little like the arcade game - the player cannot move upwards or downwards, and many of the memorable scenery in the game (such as the brick walls and turrets) were omitted due to hardware restraints. In essance this turns Zaxxon into a fairly standard LCD shoot-'em-up game, where players move left and right shooting foes before being hit.
