Vampire Survivors is a gothic horror, rogue-lite Arcade/RPG where you survive timed runs against thousands of monsters summoned in 2021 Italy. Gameplay focuses on movement, as attacks are automated; leveling up grants randomized weapon and upgrade choices, leading to powerful build synergies. Its core distinction lies in this minimalist control scheme paired with deep, emergent build crafting and persistent unlocks across numerous platforms, significantly expanded by 7 DLC packages.
The central gameplay loop revolves around surviving timed encounters against thousands of encroaching creatures. This is a highly automated action experience where the player character attacks automatically based on equipped weaponry and passive items.
The primary focus for the player is movement and strategic positioning. As enemies are defeated, they drop experience gems, which allow the player to level up mid-run. Leveling up presents randomized choices for new weapons or passive upgrades. This system encourages rapid, strategic decision-making regarding character builds and positioning to maximize area control.
A key feature is the "snowballing" effect. Successful choices in upgrades allow the player to quickly gain power, enabling them to manage the ever-increasing density and difficulty of the monster waves until the 30-minute time limit is reached.
The game distinguishes itself through its minimalist control scheme combined with deep build synergy. While movement is the only direct player input, the strategic combination of weapons, passive items, and evolution paths—where certain weapon and item pairings merge to create more powerful, evolved versions—creates complex, emergent gameplay strategies within each session.
While individual runs are self-contained survival challenges, persistent progression allows players to unlock new characters, stages, and passive bonuses that carry over between attempts. This ensures that even failed runs contribute to long-term advancement toward unlocking the full roster of content.
This main game is available across a wide array of platforms, including PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC (Microsoft Windows), Linux, Mac, iOS, and Android. The core experience has been significantly expanded since its initial release, featuring 7 downloadable content (DLC) packages that add substantial new characters, stages, and mechanics to the base game.

The free "Chaos Update" brings a new challenge stage inspired heavily by another video game franchise, along with two new relics and three achievements for Vampire Survivors players to collect. Plus, one particular relic will receive a power-up under the right conditions. The launch of this update coincides with release version 1.3.0. The Chaos Update's new stage is titled "Bat Country" and features only the titular winged creatures for players to take out in droves. The Chaos Malachite was revealed as one of the relics, which is stated to have a special interaction with the skeletal Mortaccio upon attaining level 80. The update's name and the new level are clear homages to the Sonic the Hedgehog series. In a gameplay trailer for the update, special stage elements inspired by 1991's Sonic the Hedgehog and 1994's Sonic the Hedgehog 3 were seen, with the Bat Country level's background referencing the latter's Blue Spheres stages. Even the Chaos Malachite relic is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the Chaos Emeralds from the Sonic series.

Legacy of the Moonspell is the first DLC for Vampire Survivors, and introduces a brand new stage, new characters, new monsters, and new weapons to slaughter them with. There might even be some hidden mysteries for those of an inquiring mindset, but we can neither confirm nor deny the presence of vampire.
