Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam is an extreme downhill racing and sports title where you race at high speed through seven open locations like Machu Picchu and Hong Kong. The core gameplay focuses on reaching the bottom first while navigating obstacles. On the Wii, players use tilting motions for steering and specific buttons to crouch for speed or perform tricks in the air. This main game blends racing with strategic navigation, supporting up to four players locally via split-screen on that platform.
The game thrusts players into seven distinct, open downhill environments, each presenting unique challenges and visual spectacles. These locations range from the historic ruins of Machu Picchu and the bustling streets of San Francisco and Hong Kong, to the vibrant atmosphere of Rio de Janeiro and the historic architecture of Edinburgh. Success requires not only speed but also tactical awareness to avoid environmental obstacles scattered throughout the steep tracks.
The version released for the Nintendo Wii introduced specific motion controls designed to immerse the player directly into the downhill action. By holding the Wii controller sideways, players utilize tilting motions to steer their descent down the mountain. Speed and aerial maneuvers are managed through button inputs: pressing the '2' button allows the character to crouch, building momentum for faster runs, while the '1' button serves as a versatile input for jumping and executing various tricks during air time.
Unlike many titles in the extreme sports genre, this game emphasizes pure downhill racing. While trick execution is present for speed boosts, the primary challenge revolves around maintaining high velocity, navigating complex terrain efficiently, and reaching the finish line before opponents. The strategic element comes from knowing when to push for speed versus when to execute a maneuver to maintain balance or clear an obstacle.
For local competition, the Wii version supports up to four players simultaneously via split-screen multiplayer, allowing for direct head-to-head downhill races.
As a main release title, this game does not feature any downloadable content (DLCs) or expansions. There are currently no announced remakes or remasters available.
