Operation Steel Wave is a seasonal update for the tactical shooter, Rainbow Six Siege, released in mid-2020. As part of the game's ongoing episodic structure, this content introduces new Operators: the hard-breaching attacker Ace with his S.E.L.M.A. Aqua Breacher, and the defender Melusi utilizing the Banshee Sonic Defence to slow enemies. This season also featured a significant rework of the House map, altering established sightlines and tactical flow for players across PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
Operation Steel Wave centers on the introduction of two new playable Operators, each bringing unique gadgets that directly influence breaching and defensive strategies within the established tactical framework.
The primary addition on the offensive side is Ace, characterized as a hard breacher. His signature gadget is the S.E.L.M.A. Aqua Breacher. This device combines a powerful demolition capability with a measured deployment, allowing players to create new lines of sight and entry points through reinforced surfaces, directly challenging established defender setups.
On defense, players gain access to Melusi, whose gadget is the Banshee Sonic Defence. This device emits a disruptive sonic field. When an opposing Operator moves through the area affected by the Banshee, their movement speed is significantly reduced, providing crucial auditory and physical cues to the defender about enemy positioning and momentum, even where traditional area denial tools are absent.
Beyond the new Operators, this season featured a significant overhaul of an existing map within the rotation, ensuring veteran players encounter new tactical scenarios on familiar ground.
Operation Steel Wave included a complete rework of the map known as House. This redesign aimed to update the layout, sightlines, and flow of the environment, offering a significantly altered tactical space to master compared to its previous iteration.
The introduction of Ace directly challenges defensive utility placement designed to counter traditional hard breaching methods. Conversely, Melusi’s ability to slow down aggressive pushes adds a new layer of area denial and information gathering for the defending team, forcing attackers to manage their approach speed across the map.
This seasonal content was made available across the primary platforms where the parent game is played: PlayStation 4, PC (Microsoft Windows), and Xbox One. As a component of the ongoing service model, this update does not constitute a standalone title, nor does it include any further DLCs or expansions beyond the content delivered in this specific patch.
