Released in 2001, this Real-Time Strategy and Simulator title tasks you with building an empire using one of four races: Romans, Mayans, Vikings, or Trojans. The core gameplay involves meticulous resource gathering, establishing complex trade routes, and manufacturing goods to fuel expansion and defense against the villain Morbus. A distinctive feature is the seamless zoom, letting you observe your settlers' detailed daily tasks or survey your entire growing domain. Success relies heavily on managing efficient production chains.
The underlying narrative sets the stage for conflict rooted in divine punishment. Following an uprising, the villainous Morbus has been banished to Earth by HIM, the highest god of all. Morbus harbors an intense aversion to all things green, leading his Dark Tribe to immediately commence hostilities against the planet's natural environment and fauna. Players must lead their chosen civilization to prosperity and defense against this encroaching darkness.
The gameplay loop emphasizes detailed economic simulation alongside strategic military action. Players are tasked with gathering raw materials, processing them through various manufacturing stages to create finished goods, and establishing efficient routes for these goods to travel across the growing settlement. Success hinges on the careful balancing of production, consumption, and trade.
A notable feature of this edition is the seamless zoom function. This allows players to fluidly transition from a high-level, bird's-eye view of their entire burgeoning empire down to a close-up perspective, observing individual settlers carrying out their daily tasks within the meticulously simulated environment.
Players have the opportunity to settle and lead four distinct, industrious races: the Romans, the Mayans, the Vikings, and the Trojans. Each civilization brings its own flavor to the strategic challenges presented.
While the base game offers a complete experience, the core simulation and strategy elements have been further extended through the release of four official expansion packs.
The game distinguishes itself by placing significant emphasis on the micro-management of production chains and logistics rather than purely focusing on large-scale military engagements. The ability to observe the detailed daily routines of the settlers via the dynamic zoom mechanic fosters a unique connection to the simulated economy you are building. It is a strategy title where the efficiency of your supply lines often dictates military success.
This title is accessible across multiple platforms, including its original release on PC (Microsoft Windows), and later adaptations for mobile devices running iOS and Android.

The fourth add-on to The Settlers: IV features over 60 new single- and multiplayer maps as well as four new campaigns which were all created by members of the community. The campaigns were inspired by historical events and tell the following stories.

The Vikings discovered America - the new world. But instead of claiming it for their own, they announce a regatta: Whoever arrives first in the new world, can keep it. Neither the Romans, Trojans or Maya say no to the challenge and each race has their own reasons to get to the promised land as fast as they can.

The Settlers IV: The Trojans and the Elixir of Power is an official expansion for The Settlers IV. It continues the story of the original game. The add-on introduces some new units, for example: flying machines (Manacopters) and Catapultier (special unit). There are new missions for all of the nations, including the Trojans, and a settler campaign.

A set of new missions for The Settlers IV. Although Morbus, the leader of the Dark Tribe, has been finally defeated, his tribe is not completely eradicated. Some survivors still pose a threat and wreak destruction. We can enjoy three more campaigns offering over 50 missions in total. The players can assume the role of the leader of the Romans, Mayans or Vikings. Each nation has different tasks to perform: the Romans must defeat the Dark Tribe once and for all, the Mayans must stop the Roman offensive, and the Vikings must discover an ancient world. The included map editor is a special new feature in this expansion.
