This 2002 3D action-adventure platformer sends you to the tropical Isle Delfino, where you are framed for polluting the resort. The core gameplay loop revolves around cleaning up the island using F.L.U.D.D., a multi-functional water pump that enables hovering, powerful boosts, and spraying. The game features mission-based stages, each with multiple episodes that unlock progression, blending traditional platforming with unique water-based puzzle solving and exploration.
The central mechanic distinguishing this title is the introduction of F.L.U.D.D. (Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device), a multi-functional water pump invented by Professor Gadd. This device is essential for the game's primary objective: cleaning up the graffiti and grime covering Isle Delfino.
F.L.U.D.D. offers Mario several modes of operation, fundamentally altering traversal and combat:
The game structure is mission-based, featuring numerous distinct stages, each containing multiple "episodes." Completing these episodes unlocks new areas of the island and progresses the main storyline. Gameplay heavily emphasizes exploration, puzzle-solving integrated with the water mechanics, and traditional platforming challenges.
The integration of F.L.U.D.D. transforms the standard platforming formula. Instead of relying solely on acrobatic maneuvers, players must strategically utilize water pressure and propulsion to navigate environments, defeat unique bosses, and uncover secrets. The game features a large cast of new characters and recurring foes introduced in this installment, including Toadsworth, Bowser Jr., Shadow Mario, and the native Pianta inhabitants.
Beyond the main objectives tied to F.L.U.D.D., players are encouraged to thoroughly explore every corner of the island. Each stage is layered with hidden secrets, optional challenges, and alternative paths that reward thorough investigation. Many episodes focus on platforming sequences that temporarily remove F.L.U.D.D., forcing players to rely on classic acrobatic skills.
As a main title released in 2002, this game does not feature any downloadable content (DLC) or post-launch expansions.
