Super Bust-A-Move is a classic Puzzle game, initially released in 2000. You aim and shoot colored bubbles to match three or more, clearing the screen before the stack descends. This version introduces strategic twists like giant bubbles that change all colors on screen, and mini-bubbles shot through tight gaps. Levels feature unique layouts, moving blocks, and conveyor belts that alter bubble trajectory, demanding adaptation beyond standard physics. Later versions included bonus modes resembling Space Invaders and 4P Battle.
The fundamental objective remains familiar, but this iteration introduces several novel elements that alter strategic depth across its various stages. Certain levels feature large bubbles; successfully hitting one of these with a matching color causes every bubble currently on the screen to instantly change to that color, demanding quick adaptation.
Conversely, some challenges utilize miniature bubbles and a smaller aiming reticle. These tiny projectiles can be shot through narrow gaps and expand to normal size once they cluster, opening up new angles of attack previously unavailable.
The playing field itself is subject to change. Some stages incorporate a conveyor belt system surrounding the perimeter, significantly altering the trajectory of bubbles that bounce off the walls or ceiling. Furthermore, the standard rectangular layout is often abandoned in favor of jagged shapes or stages containing internal dividing walls, forcing players to rethink standard bouncing techniques. Small, movable blocks may also appear, which shift downward with the level progression until they touch the bottom line and fall off, temporarily changing the path of incoming shots.
This version notably omits the pulley system featured in some previous titles. While the chain reaction mechanic is present, it is restricted exclusively to two-player competitive battles and is entirely optional for those matches. The focus remains heavily on mastering the physics and the introduction of these unique level modifiers.
As a main title, this game does not feature any downloadable content or expansions. However, later versions released for certain platforms outside of North America included bonus modes. These additions included a mode that plays in a similar fashion to Space Invaders and a 4P Battle where up to four players compete to clear their puzzle first before the others.
This title was developed by Taito and published by Acclaim Entertainment. It has received one remaster since its initial launch, ensuring its availability on modern systems.
