As a 2008 action-adventure RPG/Hack and Slash, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed casts you as Darth Vader’s Secret Apprentice between Episodes III and IV. The core gameplay centers on intense third-person combat, utilizing both lightsaber skills and devastating Force powers to crush the Rebellion. Its unique feature is the heavy emphasis on physics-based destruction, where players use advanced engines to realistically manipulate and destroy environments and enemies. The story reveals new lore about the Empire's dark operations.
The primary gameplay loop centers on intense third-person combat, seamlessly blending lightsaber proficiency with the application of devastating Force abilities. As the Secret Apprentice, players utilize a wide array of powers—from telekinetic throws to chain lightning—to overcome Imperial forces and environmental obstacles.
The defining mechanical feature of this title is its emphasis on environmental destruction and realistic physics simulation. The game utilizes the Digital Molecular Matter (DMM) engine, allowing players to interact with and destroy environments with a high degree of realism. Force pushes and pulls don't just affect enemies; they rip apart scenery, shields, and machinery. This is further enhanced by the Euphoria bio-mechanical AI engine, which governs enemy reactions, resulting in dynamic and often spectacular ragdoll physics during combat encounters. Players are actively encouraged to use the environment as a weapon, manipulating objects to clear paths or dispatch groups of adversaries.
The narrative perspective is the game's defining feature. By focusing on Vader’s secret pupil, the story uncovers new lore regarding the Empire’s operations and the fate of the Jedi Order during the dark times following Order 66. The journey forces Starkiller to confront his loyalty and potentially forge his own destiny, offering a fresh, often morally ambiguous look at the galaxy under Imperial rule.
Originally released in 2008, this main game has seen wide distribution across numerous platforms, including the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC (Microsoft Windows), Wii, Nintendo Switch, and older console generations like the PlayStation 2. The core experience is supported by several downloadable content (DLC) packs, which typically expand upon the existing missions or offer additional cosmetic options.
This game appeals to players who enjoy action-adventure titles heavily focused on character power fantasy, particularly those interested in exploring the darker side of the Force within the established Star Wars continuity.

The DS version maps the different combat functions to the touchscreen, allowing players to drag the stylus across multiple moves in order to create more powerful combination attacks. The game also features two mini-games that occur during the story campaign. "Feel the Force" has players dragging orbs into a vortex, which then causes huge feats to happen on screen. "Saber Lock" has players battling to keep their lightsaber perpendicular to their opponent's in order to gain the upper hand in boss fights. The game also features two multiplayer modes that let players fight against each other in arena combat.

The PlayStation 2 version of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (developed by Krome Studios) is fundamentally different from the PS3/360 versions, featuring 2–3 extra levels, shorter and differently designed missions, and no advanced Euphoria ragdoll physics. It functions more like a traditional action-adventure game with a local versus mode, offering a more complete story but inferior graphics.

The Wii port for The Force Unleashed featured significantly different gameplay, in particular full motion control for the lightsaber.
