This 2008 main game features a dual-style platforming adventure where gameplay shifts based on the time of day: daytime levels focus on trademark high-speed platforming, while nighttime stages transform into slower, action-based brawler segments utilizing a transformed state for combat. Released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, its unique feature is the mandatory mastery of both fast-paced momentum and methodical hack-and-slash mechanics to progress through its globally set adventure.
During the day, the experience reverts to the series' signature high-speed platforming. Players navigate expansive, colorful environments, focusing on momentum, precise jumps, and maintaining incredible velocity through intricate level designs. This segment emphasizes pure speed platforming.
When night falls, the gameplay undergoes a significant transformation. The protagonist transforms into a powerful, brawler-focused form. This nighttime gameplay switches the focus entirely to 3D action, incorporating elements of hack and slash mechanics. Players utilize extended reach and strength to engage in combat against hordes of enemies, requiring strategic use of combos and environmental interactions rather than pure speed.
The most distinguishing feature is the seamless integration of these two contrasting styles. The game requires players to master both the lightning-fast, momentum-based platforming of the daytime levels and the slower, methodical, action-oriented combat of the nighttime segments. This duality ensures a varied experience that tests different aspects of player skill across the Adventure and Platform genres.
The game utilizes a global setting, taking players across various international locales that have been dramatically altered by the central conflict. The atmosphere shifts dramatically between the bright, energetic feel of the daytime segments and the darker, more intense mood accompanying the nighttime action sequences.
While this is a complete main game release, players have access to downloadable content. There are currently 6 pieces of downloadable content available for this title, offering supplementary stages or challenges.
