As a main platform adventure game released in 2011, Sonic Generations lets you team up with past and present versions of Sonic to fix time rifts caused by a mysterious power. The core gameplay uniquely blends two styles: precise 2D platforming reminiscent of classic titles and high-speed 3D action featuring modern mechanics like the boost. This dual approach, set across iconic, reimagined levels, defines the experience. The game received a remaster post-launch, updating its presentation.
The fundamental gameplay loop revolves around high-speed platforming, but it is uniquely segmented to reflect two distinct eras of the franchise's design philosophy. Players must alternate between these two styles to progress through the adventure.
The game features two contrasting modes of play integrated into the level structure:
The primary objective in both styles remains traversing the stages, overcoming environmental obstacles, and utilizing rings as a defensive measure against damage.
The defining feature of this title is the direct juxtaposition of two fundamentally different gameplay styles within a single narrative framework. This allows players to directly compare and engage with both the foundational 2D platforming roots and the modern 3D speed-focused mechanics that define the series' evolution.
The stages presented are often reinterpretations or direct homages to iconic locations from the franchise's history. The visual presentation shifts dynamically to match the era being represented, moving between the simpler, vibrant aesthetics associated with the 2D stages and the more detailed, high-definition environments of the 3D stages.
This main game package includes access to one piece of downloadable content (DLC). There are no standalone expansions associated with this title.

SM64 Generations is a mod that adds Mario from Super Mario 64 to Sonic Generations, including its own abilities (including the famous Backwards Long Jump) and even the Wing Cap. This mod needs both Sonic Generations and Super Mario 64 to work.

The aim of this mod is to revamp Classic Sonic's game play in Generations and create an entirely new experience when replaying the game. Note that this doesn't mean he was bad in the original game. This mod simply tries to add upon the experience while also making him play a bit more in line with what you would expect from Classic Sonic game play.

This unofficial project ports most of Sonic Unleashed's daytime levels from the Xbox 360 version into Sonic Generations on PC. It also includes any improvements that are deemed as necessary to accomodate to the better control scheme, higher resolution graphics, and much smoother framerate.

In the 3DS version of Sonic Generations, Modern Sonic's gameplay is similar to that of Sonic Rush and the DS version of Sonic Colors. He has the Boost, the ability to slide under obstacles, jump off walls, and the Homing Attack. After the second era, Modern Sonic learns the Stomp. Modern Sonic's levels use the 3D effect of depth on the 3DS version more actively as well as to giving a better view for when Modern Sonic jumps into the background, although the console versions are 3D-TV compatible. In the HD version, Modern Sonic is only able to wall jump off certain panels (similar to the DS version of Sonic Colors), but in the 3DS version, he is able to wall jump on any wall (much like Sonic Unleashed and the Wii version of Sonic Colors).
