SM64CoOpDX is a specialized fork of the Super Mario 64 PC port, focusing on extensive online multiplayer for up to 16 players. This platform experience supports widescreen and uncapped FPS, offering numerous toggleable options for deep customization. Its core value lies in transforming the classic adventure into a shared activity, further enhanced by a powerful Lua modding API that continually introduces unique community-driven content. Available on PC, Mac, and Linux, it modernizes the original game's structure for cooperative play.
The primary focus of this project is robust, accessible online multiplayer. It supports sessions with up to 16 players simultaneously navigating the familiar Mushroom Kingdom environments. While the setting and core objective remain true to the source material—exploring worlds to collect Power Stars—the gameplay is fundamentally altered by the introduction of large-scale cooperative play.
This version significantly upgrades the technical foundation inherited from the PC port. Key enhancements include support for widescreen resolutions and the removal of the original frame rate cap, allowing for smoother performance tailored to modern displays. Players have extensive control over their session via numerous toggleable options, enabling customization of the gameplay environment to suit various group preferences.
The most distinguishing feature beyond the high player count is the integration of a powerful, ever-growing Lua modding API. This feature empowers the community to create and implement new content, mechanics, and rule sets. For the casual player, this means the potential for unique, community-driven variations of the classic game are constantly expanding, offering novel ways to engage with the established levels and characters.
As a fork of an existing PC port, this project inherits the stability and flexibility of that base while layering on significant social and technical improvements. It is designed to make the classic platforming challenge more accessible and adaptable for groups.
Currently, there are no official DLCs or expansions associated with this release. The content available is derived from the base game structure enhanced by the built-in customization features and the expanding library of community-created modifications accessible through the modding API.
This game is playable across three major operating systems: Linux, Microsoft Windows, and Mac. It was launched in 2024, ensuring compatibility with contemporary hardware setups while retaining the nostalgic appeal of its source material.
