This main game is a classic action role-playing experience that first appeared in 1993. The narrative centers on a world where civilization once thrived using the mystical power known as Mana. After a catastrophic war involving the Mana Fortress, a fragile peace settled, but history suggests this balance is threatened as an empire seeks to harness Mana's control. Players take on the role of Randi, accompanied by two companions, Primm and Popoi, in an epic quest across the globe.
The core gameplay loop involves real-time exploration and dynamic combat against various adversaries. The adventure is driven by the need to protect the world's natural balance by confronting those who would exploit this power. A significant element of the journey involves forming alliances with the eight elementals, beings intrinsically tied to the forces of nature.
As an Action RPG, the game distinguishes itself by utilizing real-time battles rather than traditional turn-based systems. Players must actively position and time their attacks during encounters. The experience is designed to be accessible, allowing both beginners and seasoned players of the genre to engage with the combat system effectively.
A standout mechanical feature, first introduced here and subsequently adopted across the series, is the Ring Command menu system. By pressing a single button, a circular menu appears overlaid on the game screen. This allows players to manage inventory, change weapons, and access other critical functions without needing to pause the action or transition to a separate screen, ensuring a seamless flow between combat and exploration.
The central plot revolves around the protagonist's journey to safeguard the power of Mana. This involves navigating diverse environments and engaging in numerous encounters that shape the unfolding story. Success often relies on building relationships and securing the aid of the elemental forces.
This title has been made available across several platforms over the years, including the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), Wii U, iOS, and Android devices, providing broad accessibility to its core content.
Regarding current content additions, this main release does not feature any downloadable content (DLCs) or standalone expansions. While a remake of this game exists, this overview focuses on the established core experience.
Its unique blend of direct, real-time action combat integrated with the highly efficient Ring Command menu system sets it apart. The focus remains firmly on the high-fantasy adventure and the immediate engagement with the world's challenges.

Secret of Mana Turbo is a compilation of independent mods aimed at streamlining and accelerating the tried and true gameplay of Secret of Mana. Some of the main features include a streamlined weapon change menu and the removal of stamina, making a stream of consecutive attacks possible.

Secret of Mana - Relocalized focuses on updating, uncensoring, and "relocalizing" gameplay, graphical, and text (both script and non-script) elements of Secret of Mana. Death Machine: AKA Kettle Kin gets restored to its full uncensored chainsaw wielding glory. Not only is this a graphical hack, it also rewrites its AI to perform just as it did in the original Japanese release. Teleportation Circles: When Square released this game in 1993 Nintendo of America had strict policies against religious imagery appearing in its titles. The six-pointed stars in the teleportation circles were reduced to triangles. This hack restores them to their original appearance. Title Screen Background: When Square ported this game over to English, they butchered the original background image. Because of some graphical problems they cropped the image of the full Mana Tree at its roots and expanded it. The result is a blurry pixelated mess. Relocalized restores the original image. Opening Text Crawl: Relocalized updates the opening text crawl to that of the superior HD version. Mixed Case Character Names: This features adds lowercase letters to the character naming screen. Relocalization: The titular feature. This hack takes the game’s outdated, awkward, and inaccurate text and script elements and localizes them differently. Just like with FuSoYa’s hack before it, Relocalized holds true to the style of beloved 90’s Squaresoft translator, Ted Woolsey.
