As a hack and slash main game released in 2006, you engage in large-scale battlefield combat set in historical Japan, building upon the original by adding new characters and refining mechanics. The core loop involves mastering each officer's two unique special abilities, replacing traditional range attacks. Replayability is supported by Survival Mode, where you fight through an endless castle, and a four-player Sugoroku mini-game focused on collecting gold.
The gameplay loop centers on strategic deployment and visceral, large-scale combat. While retaining the foundational hack and slash structure, significant mechanical changes were implemented compared to its predecessor. A notable shift involves the removal of traditional, standardized range attacks for every character.
Instead, each playable officer now possesses two unique special abilities that define their combat style and strategic approach on the battlefield. This customization encourages players to master the distinct movesets of their chosen warriors.
The focus on individualized character abilities over uniform ranged options provides a deeper layer of mechanical differentiation between the roster. Successfully navigating large armies requires understanding when and how to deploy these specific skills to clear large groups of enemies or engage powerful enemy officers.
Beyond the main campaign structure where players progress through various historical scenarios, the game features several distinct modes designed to extend replayability.
A returning feature from the original, Survival Mode challenges players to select a character and fight through an endless castle. This mode tests endurance and mastery of the combat system against waves of increasingly difficult opponents.
An additional feature included is the Sugoroku mini-game. This mode supports up to four players, requiring each participant to choose a character. The objective is to collect a predetermined amount of in-game gold, based on player-set parameters, adding a competitive, board-game-like diversion to the action.
This main game release does not include any downloadable content (DLCs). However, it has received one official expansion pack, which adds further content and features to the core experience.
The content of this game is suitable for persons aged 12 years and over only. It contains: Non realistic looking violence towards human characters

Samurai Warriors 2: Xtreme Legends is the fifth Xtreme Legends expansion by Koei. It shares the same achievements with the parent game on the Xbox 360. The expansion introduced new characters to the series. Imagawa Yoshimoto from Samurai Warriors: Xtreme Legends returned in the expansion with an updated character design, and Shibata Katsuie and Sasaki Kojiro from Samurai Warriors 2 Empires are also playable and have new weapons. Shibata Katsuie wields two hand axes, while Sasaki Kojiro still carries a nodachi, but can now summon an ex-dimensional sword during battle. Because Imagawa Yoshimoto was put back into the game, the previously omitted Battle of Okehazama is brought back, and Hideyoshi's Shikoku campaign against Chosokabe Motochika is also included.

Samurai Warriors 2 Empires is an expansion to the original Samurai Warriors 2 and the third Empires expansion by Koei. Very similar to both Dynasty Warriors 4 Empires and Dynasty Warriors 5 Empires, the game features the strategic and tactical Empire Mode that combines the gameplay of Samurai Warriors and several turn-based strategy elements from Nobunaga's Ambition and Romance of the Three Kingdoms. The Empire mode allows the player to select from some of Japan's greatest battles. In the CAW Mode, the options are limited to 13 models with 10 color patterns each, as well as four different voices. Fortunately, a new feature is added to the mix: the ability to copy movesets of other characters. Unlike Samurai Warriors: Xtreme Legends, the game does not feature new characters for the series. However, Sasaki Kojiro and Shibata Katsuie, who were unplayable special bodyguards in the original Samurai Warriors 2, are now playable characters in Samurai Warriors 2 Empires.
