Sackboy: A Big Adventure is a 3D platforming adventure game where you guide the iconic hero through imaginative, handcrafted worlds. The core gameplay involves precise platforming using an expressive control scheme to navigate levels and solve environmental puzzles. The story centers on rescuing kidnapped friends from the villainous Vex, who seeks to destroy Craftworld with his Topsy Turver device. A key feature is the option for collaborative, chaotic multiplayer alongside solo play. Released in 2020, this title emphasizes tactile movement and visual charm across its main adventure.
The game plunges players into Craftworld, a realm traditionally defined by pure imagination and whimsical dreams. However, this idyllic setting is threatened by the villainous Vex, a being born of chaos and fear. Vex has kidnapped Sackboy’s friends and forced them into constructing the Topsy Turver, a device intended to transform Craftworld into a desolate wasteland. The core narrative follows a race against time, guided by an ancient prophecy from the Knitted Knights, the legendary protectors of Craftworld, tasking the brave and chivalrous with saving their home from impending doom.
The primary gameplay loop involves navigating intricate, multi-layered 3D levels. Players utilize Sackboy’s unique abilities to jump, roll, and interact with the environment. A key feature is the expressive control scheme, which emphasizes tactile movement and platforming precision. While the adventure can be undertaken solo, a significant component of the experience involves cooperative multiplayer. Players can team up with friends for collaborative, and often chaotic, fun as they tackle challenges together. The game emphasizes exploration and discovery across its diverse stages.
The distinct appeal lies in its visual aesthetic—a world constructed from tangible materials like fabric, cardboard, and yarn—combined with the highly tactile feel of controlling the main character. Furthermore, the emphasis on both focused solo platforming and dynamic, shared cooperative play sets it apart. The game features a robust set of core mechanics without any currently released downloadable content or expansions, meaning the entire main adventure is available within the base package.
As of the current date, this title has no officially released downloadable content (DLCs) or expansions. The experience is contained entirely within the main game release.
Violence is always directed at fantasy characters. Violence is cartoon-like in nature, as are reactions to it. For example, enemies disappear in puffs of smoke when defeated and the player’s character falls down and floats up like a ghost when defeated. The colourful visual style makes any violence less disturbing. The game also features some boss-fights, most of which pit the player against huge monster-like creatures. These boss-monsters can be somewhat frightening, most notably the game’s antagonist, Vex, a giant jester-like doll with huge glowing eyes. The design could scare young children.
