As the seventh main installment, this 2009 action-adventure shooter shifts the focus to intense combat using an over-the-shoulder view. You play as BSAA agent Chris Redfield, partnered with Sheva Alomar, investigating a bio-agent outbreak in Africa that creates aggressive enemies called Majini. A core mechanic is the mandatory partnership; survival depends on coordinating with your AI or co-op partner, managing shared resources, and reviving them if downed. The environment plays a key tactical role in this action-heavy entry, which has received updates via a remaster.
The narrative places players in the shoes of BSAA agent Chris Redfield, years after the downfall of the Umbrella Corporation. Sent to a remote region of Africa, Chris is tasked with investigating a biological agent that is rapidly turning the local populace into aggressive, disturbing creatures known as Majini. He is partnered with fellow BSAA agent Sheva Alomar, and together they must work to solve the truth behind this escalating bio-terror threat.
A defining feature of this game is the mandatory cooperative element. Unlike earlier installments, players are heavily reliant on their partner, Sheva, throughout the campaign. This partnership is crucial for survival, as players must manage shared resources and coordinate combat strategies against overwhelming numbers of enemies.
The environment itself plays a significant role in the gameplay loop, influencing tactical positioning and combat encounters. When a partner's health reaches zero, they enter a critical dying state, requiring immediate assistance to prevent permanent incapacitation. Players must manage inventory space collaboratively, as each character has limited carrying capacity. Furthermore, reviving a downed partner is a necessary mechanic for progression, reinforcing the theme of mutual dependence against the bio-organic threats.
The shift in focus emphasizes continuous, high-stakes combat against swarms of infected individuals, moving away from traditional puzzle-heavy survival horror toward a more action-oriented shooter experience. The dynamic partnership system is central to navigating the challenges presented by the new enemy types.
This main game features three downloadable content (DLC) packages available for players seeking additional experiences. It has received one remaster, updating the visuals and performance for modern systems, but no full remakes or standalone expansions have been released for the core title.
The game requires constant coordination between the two playable characters. Success hinges on effective communication and resource sharing to manage the increased enemy density compared to prior entries in the series.
The game contains depictions of realistic-looking violence. The game contains bad language (e.g. sexual expletives or blasphemy).
