This content is a downloadable content (DLC) package for the base game, Prison Architect. Released in January 2021, it expands the core simulation and strategy experience by introducing significant new systems centered around agriculture and sustainability within the player-managed correctional facility. It requires the base game to play and integrates these new features directly into the existing management framework, offering substantial new avenues for resource management, inmate labor, and facility design.
New Gameplay Mechanics: Farming and Produce Management
The central addition is the introduction of large-scale agriculture as a viable prison labor option. Inmates can now work to cultivate various crops, including potatoes, wheat, and apples, across newly available outdoor farming areas such as
Farm Field,
Fruit Orchard, and
Vegetable Allotment.
How does farming impact the prison economy?
The harvested produce serves dual purposes: it can be used directly as ingredients in the prison kitchens to feed the inmate population, or it can be exported for profit. To manage these new resources effectively, players must construct a dedicated
Pantry building for storage. Furthermore, specialized staff, such as
Farm Workers, can be recruited to oversee these operations.
Environmental and Energy Systems
This update also brings an eco-friendly dimension to facility management. Players gain access to new, sustainable power sources, including
Solar,
Wind, and
Solar/Wind Hybrid power generators.
This shift towards green energy introduces a new layer of utility management. Excess power generated by these renewable sources can be sold back to the external power grid using the Power Export Meter, creating an additional revenue stream for the Warden.
Inmate Recreation and New Contraband Challenges
Beyond industrial farming, the DLC offers recreational opportunities focused on nature. Inmates can engage in
Gardening activities, growing flowers and other plants, which serves as a positive recreation outlet that can influence inmate mood.
However, new opportunities for labor and recreation also introduce new security risks. Prisoners may attempt to secretly cultivate illicit herbs within the fields. Additionally, the increased presence of raw materials in the facility raises the potential for inmates to acquire kitchen ingredients to brew contraband alcohol, requiring heightened vigilance from guards.
What platforms is this content available on?
This DLC is available across multiple platforms, including PC (Microsoft Windows), Linux, Mac, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
Scope and Integration
As an expansion to the established simulation, this content deepens the strategic layer of the parent game by adding complex resource chains (growing, storing, cooking/selling) and new infrastructure options (power sources). It is designed to be seamlessly integrated, offering Wardens new tools and challenges within their existing prison environments rather than introducing entirely separate campaigns or storylines.
