OpenXcom is an open-source recreation (Mod) of the classic 1994 tactical strategy game, X-COM: UFO Defense, first released in 2014. You manage a global defense force, balancing strategic base building and research on the Geoscape with intense, turn-based tactical combat missions against invading aliens. Its core appeal lies in deep squad management, permanent soldier death, and the Time Unit system governing movement and firing, all preserved and modernized for current PC platforms.
The setting places players in the role of commander for X-COM, a multinational paramilitary organization tasked with defending Earth from extraterrestrial threats. The gameplay loop is divided between two distinct layers: a strategic Geoscape layer where players manage research, manufacturing, base construction, and intercepting UFOs; and a detailed, turn-based tactical combat layer where squads of soldiers engage alien forces on various mission maps.
Operational success requires careful resource allocation and tactical precision. Players must research recovered alien technology to develop countermeasures, outfit their soldiers with increasingly advanced weaponry, and maintain public support across the globe. Inadequate response to alien incursions results in increased panic and potential loss of national funding.
The defining characteristic of this experience is the depth of its turn-based combat system. Each soldier's actions are governed by a limited pool of Time Units (TUs) per turn, forcing critical, moment-to-moment decisions regarding movement, aiming accuracy, firing, and the deployment of specialized equipment. Furthermore, the game features permanent soldier death; veteran troops lost in the field are removed from the roster permanently, significantly raising the stakes of every engagement.
As an open-source clone, this version benefits from community contributions, often resulting in a highly polished and stable rendition of the original vision, free from the limitations of its initial release platform.
While retaining the original game's structure and core mechanics, this implementation introduces significant quality-of-life improvements. These often include enhanced user interfaces, better support for community modifications, and streamlined management options that make the complex strategic layer more manageable for modern players. The fundamental tactical challenge remains faithful to the source material, but the execution is modernized for current hardware and expectations.
This project is distributed focusing on delivering a definitive, feature-complete version of the base game experience. It does not currently include official downloadable content (DLCs) or standalone expansions.
