Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty is a faithful remake of the classic survival-platformer, rebuilding the original's pre-rendered environments in real-time 3D, creating a true 2.5D experience while preserving the core puzzle and timing-based gameplay. You play as Abe, a slave escaping a meatpacking plant, utilizing the expandable GameSpeak system to command others. This version modernizes presentation, adds three difficulty levels, and features online leaderboards for speedrunning, while retaining the original's turn-based co-op function.
Players step into the worn boots of Abe, a Mudokon slave working in the massive, industrialized meatpacking complex known as RuptureFarms. Abe is a "first-class Floor-Waxer" whose life takes a drastic turn when he overhears the horrifying business plan of his Glukkon boss, Molluck: turning Abe and his fellow Mudokons into the next line of processed "Tasty Treats." This revelation forces the unlikely hero into a desperate flight through the dark, desolate, and often terrifying environments surrounding the factory. The central narrative revolves around Abe’s mission to escape and potentially save thousands of his enslaved kin from becoming dinner.
The gameplay remains rooted in the 2D platforming and puzzle-solving genres. Success hinges on careful timing, environmental awareness, and the unique communication system known as GameSpeak.
Abe utilizes GameSpeak to interact with the world and, crucially, to command other Mudokons. Initially, this system features a basic set of commands, but it expands as the adventure progresses, allowing for more complex coordination with other enslaved workers to solve intricate environmental puzzles or create diversions.
While the fundamental gameplay loop is preserved, this version represents a significant technical overhaul. The original game utilized pre-rendered backgrounds linked together by single screens. This remake rebuilds those environments entirely in real-time 3D, transitioning the experience into a true 2.5D side-scrolling format. This change allows for smoother camera movement and greater visual depth compared to the original structure.
Enhancements extend to character models and scenery details, though the fundamental challenge and level design remain largely identical to the original game, ensuring fidelity to the source material.
To cater to modern audiences, this version incorporates features designed to enhance replayability and competition. The game includes three distinct difficulty levels. Furthermore, support for online leaderboards tracks completion times for individual levels and the overall game, encouraging speedrunning attempts.
The original cooperative function is also included, allowing a second player to take control of Abe if the first player dies, enabling turn-based shared progression.
This edition includes one piece of downloadable content (DLC) available for purchase, offering supplementary material beyond the main campaign.
