Oasis is a 2005 turn-based strategy game where you play an Egyptian prince uniting fragmented kingdoms shrouded in sorcerous fog. The core loop involves turn-limited exploration, similar to Minesweeper but without negative clicks, to reveal terrain. Once explored, you must strategically spend remaining turns building roads and finding treasures to prepare for an automated barbarian attack. Victory depends entirely on pre-battle infrastructure setup, as the final defense is a brief, ten-second evacuation maneuver.
The primary gameplay loop revolves around managing time and information before a decisive barbarian attack. Players spend their allotted turns exploring the fog-shrouded map. This exploration functions similarly to Minesweeper; clicking a space clears the fog and reveals information about adjacent tiles, guiding the player toward important cities and resources. Crucially, unlike its inspiration, there are no immediate negative consequences for exploration clicks.
Once enough of the map is revealed to identify key terrain features, players must shift focus from pure exploration to strategic development. Turns can be spent establishing infrastructure, such as building roads between discovered cities, or searching these locations for hidden treasures that may prove vital for defense. Every turn is a calculated choice: delve deeper into the unknown, or solidify existing gains?
The game blends traditional strategic planning with a unique, non-punitive discovery mechanic. Victory is not achieved through direct combat during the preparation phase, but through meticulous setup. When the turn limit is reached, the barbarian hordes arrive. The player has a brief, ten-second window to maneuver their populace into the nearest secured city—a process entirely dependent on the road network built beforehand. Success hinges entirely on the preparations made during the exploration and building phases; the final defense is automated based on that prior strategic positioning.
This title is presented as the main game. There are no officially released downloadable content packs or expansions associated with this release.
The challenge lies in optimizing the use of limited turns. Since every map click reveals information, but not all information is equally valuable at every moment, players must constantly weigh the benefit of revealing new territory against the necessity of building roads or securing resources for the inevitable final confrontation. The full version of the game also includes the "Pharaoh's Challenge," which offers a selection of campaign scenarios featuring variant rules built upon the core gameplay structure.
