This 2.5D side-scrolling platformer, released in 2009, centers on Mario, Luigi, and allies pursuing Bowser Jr. to rescue Princess Peach after she is kidnapped from her birthday party. Core gameplay involves precise jumping and navigating levels, enhanced by new power-ups like the Propeller Mushroom and Penguin Suit. Its distinctive feature is the integrated four-player simultaneous co-op and versus multiplayer modes, making it a main-line adventure focused on classic platforming challenges.
The gameplay centers on precise 2D platforming, requiring players to navigate intricate levels filled with obstacles, enemies, and hidden secrets. Players utilize standard moves like jumping and stomping, alongside new power-ups that fundamentally alter abilities. This entry introduces significant additions to the power-up roster, notably the Propeller Mushroom, which grants temporary vertical flight, and the Penguin Suit, which enhances swimming capabilities and allows for sliding across icy surfaces.
The most significant departure from previous single-player focused entries is the introduction of robust, simultaneous multiplayer support for up to four players. This feature allows friends to tackle the entire adventure together, either cooperatively or competitively, making it the first main series title since the original Mario Bros. arcade game to feature both co-op and versus modes integrated into the main experience.
The game features an expanded roster of levels and introduces a greater variety of enemies compared to its immediate handheld predecessor. Exploration remains a key component, rewarding players who seek out hidden pathways and secret exits to unlock new areas of the map.
This title does not feature any downloadable content (DLC) or expansions. The content available at launch constitutes the complete single-player and four-player multiplayer experience.
The content of this game is suitable for all persons. It contains: Violence that is set in a cartoon, slapstick or child like setting
