Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is a 2005 action-adventure beat 'em up where you play as Liu Kang or Kung Lao, continuing the story after the first tournament. The core loop involves intense, fast-paced combat against hordes of enemies, utilizing martial arts combos and integrating environmental weapon use and brutal Fatalities directly into the flow. Its distinctive feature is the seamless cooperative mode, allowing two players to tackle the entire campaign together, requiring teamwork to overcome challenges.
The primary gameplay loop revolves around intense, fast-paced combat combined with exploration and environmental puzzle-solving. Unlike its fighting counterparts, this game emphasizes large-scale brawls against numerous enemies simultaneously. Players utilize a deep arsenal of martial arts moves, special abilities, and environmental weapons to dispatch hordes of foes.
A central mechanic involves executing brutal finishing moves, known as Fatalities, on stunned enemies, which are integrated directly into the standard combat flow rather than being reserved solely for one-on-one matches. Furthermore, the game features a robust combo system that rewards skillful execution and chaining attacks together.
The narrative serves as a direct continuation and reimagining of the storyline bridging the first tournament to the second. After successfully defeating Shang Tsung on his island fortress, the heroes find their home academy under siege by Baraka and his Tarkatan warriors. Faced with this immediate threat, Liu Kang and Kung Lao decide to proactively confront the danger by venturing directly into Outworld to face Shao Kahn.
The atmosphere blends the dark fantasy elements of the franchise with the kinetic energy of a classic beat 'em up, taking players through diverse and dangerous locales across both Earthrealm and Outworld.
A defining feature of this title is the seamless integration of cooperative multiplayer. Players can tackle the entire campaign alongside a friend, controlling either Liu Kang or Kung Lao. This co-op mode often requires coordinated attacks and teamwork to overcome specific challenges and boss encounters, significantly altering the strategic approach to combat encounters.
This main game release does not feature any downloadable content or official expansions. The experience is self-contained as released on the PlayStation 2 and Xbox platforms in 2005.

Inspired in part by the action-RPG-styled "Konquest" segments of 2004's Deception, Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is a full-fledged fighting adventure that leads players in a violent, epic struggle through the storied Mortal Kombat universe. As either of two of the series' Shaolin monks, Liu Kang or Kung Lao, players will make their way through the various realms of the extra-dimensional fighting competition from a third-person perspective. The game engine is designed to allow characters to attack and defend themselves from enemies in any direction -- ahead, behind, or on either side.
