Mortal Kombat 4 is a 1 vs 1 fighting game notable for being the first in the series to feature fully 3D character models. You choose from a roster including returning icons like Scorpion and new threats like Shinnok, battling across various stages. The core gameplay involves mastering character-specific moves in a three-dimensional combat space. The story centers on the escaped Elder God Shinnok seeking vengeance against the realms, forcing Earthrealm warriors to intervene. This main title, released in 1997, focuses purely on its core fighting experience without post-launch DLC.
The narrative centers on the return of the banished Elder God, Shinnok. After millennia trapped in the Netherrealm, Shinnok has escaped with the aid of the sorcerer Quan Chi and is now set on conquering the realms, beginning with Edenia. To counter this escalating threat against the Elder Gods, Raiden calls upon the seasoned Earthrealm warriors who have previously defended the world. Players step into this conflict, choosing from a roster of established heroes and villains alongside dangerous new adversaries intent on aiding Shinnok’s conquest.
As a dedicated 1 vs 1 fighting game, the gameplay emphasizes precise timing, spacing, and execution of complex combinations. While retaining the familiar feel of its predecessors, the move to 3D character models fundamentally alters movement and positioning during combat. Players must adapt to fighting in a three-dimensional space, utilizing sidestepping to evade attacks and open new angles of approach against their opponents.
The most notable departure from previous installments is the introduction of full 3D character models. This transition affects everything from character animations to the tactical depth of the combat system, requiring players to master movement in a new dimension. Furthermore, the game features a roster combining returning fan-favorites such as Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Liu Kang, and Sonya Blade, with formidable newcomers like the main antagonist Shinnok, Fujin, Jarek, and Kai. The final boss encounter features the return of Goro.
At launch, players have access to 15 distinct fighters, with additional characters available to unlock through gameplay progression. The game was made available across several major platforms of the era, including Arcade, PlayStation, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, and PC (Microsoft Windows).
This main title does not feature any downloadable content (DLC) or official expansions.

The first and only Mortal Kombat title to make onto the Dreamcast console, Mortal Kombat Gold offered players a carbon-copy of the arcade edition of Mortal Kombat 4, along with additional features and characters never before included in the arcade game. Using the exact same engine found in Mortal Kombat 4, the game performs flawlessly on the Dreamcast platform, while also running at a higher resolution than its arcade counterpart.

Mortal Kombat 4 is 1 vs 1 fighting game, similar to the other Mortal Kombat games, but this is first game in series with 3D characters models. The player can choose from 15 different fighters at the start (and several unlockables later on). Many fighters from earlier games in the series make a comeback (like Scorpion, Sub Zero, Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage etc.) while other new fighters join in, like Shinook (who is the main evil character in this game), Fujin, Jarek, and Kai. Goro returns as a boss.
