As a post-apocalyptic horror first-person shooter, this main game continues Artyom's story following a major confrontation, where surviving Metro stations fight for power. You will navigate dark, dangerous environments, balancing intense combat with crucial stealth mechanics. Ammunition is scarce, with higher-grade bullets acting as the game's currency, forcing tactical decisions between lethal/non-lethal takedowns and saving resources for mutant threats. Released in 2013, this title emphasizes atmosphere and survival resource management, and has since received a remaster.
The story immediately follows a critical event from the previous installment, where the protagonist, Artyom, was involved in a devastating confrontation with the mysterious, seemingly supernatural race known as the Dark Ones. Now, the surviving station-cities within the Metro network are vying for power and resources, often utilizing salvaged weaponry from the D6 military facility. Players step back into the boots of Artyom as he embarks on a perilous mission to locate a singular figure referred to as the "Prisoner," who is believed to hold the key to humanity's continued existence in the darkness.
This title blends intense first-person shooting with significant stealth elements, demanding careful resource management. Ammunition is extremely scarce, elevating standard-grade bullets to the status of the Metro's primary currency. This scarcity forces players to make tactical decisions regarding combat engagement.
Players can carry a limited arsenal, typically up to three weapons simultaneously. When facing armed human opponents, stealth is heavily encouraged as a means to conserve precious ammunition for encounters with the mutated creatures that roam the tunnels. Furthermore, in many confrontations, players are presented with a choice: engage in direct firefights or utilize stealth approaches, including the option for both lethal and non-lethal takedowns against human enemies.
The core challenge revolves around resource scarcity and the dual threat posed by both mutated wildlife and hostile human factions. Higher-grade military bullets serve as the game's economy, meaning every shot fired is a financial transaction. This system directly influences player behavior, often prioritizing stealth and non-lethal options to preserve valuable ammunition for unavoidable mutant encounters.
While this is the core experience, the game has received additional downloadable content, consisting of three distinct DLC packs that expand upon the world and gameplay scenarios. It is important to note that this title has also received a remaster, updating the visuals and performance for newer hardware generations, providing an enhanced presentation of the original 2013 experience.
