Links 2001 is a dedicated PC golf simulation from 2000, focusing on realistic mechanics through updated ball physics and centimeter-accurate greens. The core loop involves mastering shots across six included world-class courses, utilizing custom club distances. Distinctive features include playing alongside or against pros like Arnold Palmer and Annika Sörenstam, and the Arnold Palmer Course Designer tool for creating custom layouts. The game also supported faster online play and featured unique golfer personalities.
The simulation engine in this version features updated ball physics designed to enhance realism during play. A significant focus has been placed on the greens, which are rendered with centimeter accuracy, demanding precise approach shots and careful reading of the contours for successful putting.
Players have the ability to customize their equipment setup, including setting custom club distances, allowing for fine-tuning of their virtual bag to match their preferred playing style or to adapt to specific course challenges.
The game includes a roster of recognizable professional golfers, allowing players to compete as or against golfing heroes such as Arnold Palmer, Sergio Garcia, and Annika Sörenstam. This roster adds a layer of familiarity and competitive structure to the simulation.
Six world-class courses are included at launch, spanning diverse geographical locations and styles. These include Aviara in San Diego, Chateau Whistler in Canada, The Prince Course on Kauai, Hawaii, Westfields Golf Club, the historic St Andrews Old Course, and the fantasy layout, Mesa Roja. Additional courses were made available for free download via the web following the initial release.
A standout feature for creative players is the inclusion of the Arnold Palmer Course Designer. This utility allows users to build their own complete golf holes, managing the design from the tee to the fairway to the placement of the hole itself.
The online component of the game was updated to be faster and easier, facilitating competitive play against other users across the internet. Beyond technical improvements, the simulation incorporates golfers who each possess their own distinct personalities, adding a character element to the competitive field.
This main game release does not feature any downloadable content (DLCs). However, it was supported by two expansion packs released post-launch, which added further courses and content to the simulation.

An add on pack for Links 2001. Included are four new Links courses (Thanksgiving Point, The Canyons Course at Bighorn, Pelican Hill 2001 version, and Banff Springs 2001 version), over 350 objects for use in the course designer, two tour players (Mike Weir and Keith Clearwater), and a Links LS course converter (this is needed to convert courses from previous versions of Links LS to Links 2001 format. There is a total of 36 courses this utility supports.)

Links Expansion Pack Volume 2 owners will be able to line it up in the natural desert terrain of Arizona’s Stone Canyon Club or lakeside on the Robert Trent Jones Alabama Golf Trail‘s Links Course at Grand National. Also, players can tee off on the newly-updated dramatic cliff-lined fairways of The Fazio Foothills Course at Barton Creek, and enjoy updated graphics on the panoramic scenery and challenge of Scottsdale‘s Troon North. As an added bonus, PC golfers can enjoy Ayrshire Dunes (also known as northern Dunes), a fictional course created with the Arnold Palmer Course Designer by Links enthusiast Mike Jones.
