Knights and Merchants: The Shattered Kingdom is a 1998 Real-Time Strategy and Simulation game set in a grounded, non-fantastical Anglo-Saxon Middle Ages (1200 A.D.). You begin as a captain tasked with defending the last royal province after a conspiracy shatters the kingdom. The core loop involves establishing detailed economic production chains and resource management to support military conquest, aiming to reclaim lost fiefdoms for the king. Its distinctive feature is the strong emphasis on realistic logistics and economy over mythical elements.
The gameplay blends traditional RTS elements with detailed simulation aspects, focusing on resource management, economy building, and military conquest. Unlike many contemporaries, this title emphasizes a grounded approach to medieval life and warfare.
The central loop involves establishing a functioning economy to support military expansion. Players must manage the production chains necessary to equip and sustain their forces. This includes gathering raw materials, processing them into goods, and ensuring a steady supply chain to fuel the rebuilding of the kingdom.
Military engagements require strategic deployment of units, which are historically inspired rather than fantastical. Success hinges on careful planning of both economic infrastructure and battlefield tactics.
The game strives for an authentic medieval feel based on the 1200 A.D. setting. The atmosphere is one of political fragmentation and the arduous task of reunification. The narrative begins with the player defending the remnants of a broken realm, setting the stage for a campaign of reclamation across various small principalities.
The scope of the adventure centers entirely on this central conflict: restoring the shattered kingdom through military and economic dominance.
As of the current date, there are no officially released downloadable content packs or expansions associated with this main game title.
A key differentiator is the game's commitment to a realistic, non-fantastical depiction of the Middle Ages, focusing heavily on the logistics and economic simulation required to maintain a medieval military force. The player's journey from a simple captain to the restorer of a kingdom provides a grounded, strategic challenge rooted in historical context rather than magic or mythical beasts.

The KaM Remake mod is an attempt to reinvigorate the original “Knights and Merchants: The Shattered Kingdom” strategy game. Our goals are to make it work on today’s computers and operating systems, implement a fully featured online multiplayer system, as well as to fix the many bugs in the game engine. To do this we have started from scratch, writing our own code for the game engine but still relying on many original resource files. We assume that you own the original KaM game, (the installer checks for it) otherwise you should buy it – it’s available in a number of online gaming stores. The KaM Remake executable is freeware and is built by enthusiasts. Applications used: Delphi 6, Delphi 7, FastMM4, Lazarus, OpenGL, OpenAL, zLib, PNGImage, MadExcept, libZPlay.
