As a main fighting game released in 1996, this title continues its predecessor's story by sending combatants via a time warp 2000 years into the past, where they must fight the escaped Demon Lord Gargos. The core gameplay involves one-on-one technical combat, focusing on chaining attacks into combo strings and using unique special moves. Its distinctive feature is the narrative shift: the conflict is a desperate fight to secure the future timeline rather than a standard tournament.
The atmosphere shifts dramatically as the action is transported 2000 years into the past. While some returning characters, such as T.J. Combo, are primarily focused on finding a way back to their own time, others, like the newly introduced warrior Tusk, are dedicated to stopping Gargos's burgeoning reign of evil in this historical period. The narrative focuses on these disparate groups uniting—or clashing—to confront the escaped Demon Lord.
As a dedicated Fighting game, the experience centers on one-on-one combat utilizing a diverse roster of fighters. Players engage in intense matches requiring precise timing and execution of special moves and combos. The system emphasizes fast-paced action and strategic use of each character's unique move set to overcome opponents.
The sequel refines the established mechanics, focusing on deep combo systems and character differentiation. While the core structure remains true to the genre, the introduction of new characters native to the past timeline brings fresh fighting styles and strategies into the fray, contrasting with the motivations and abilities of the time-displaced veterans.
The roster features a mix of returning and new fighters. Notably, some key characters from the first installment, including Chief Thunder, Cinder, and Riptor, do not return for this installment. Each character, whether a survivor of the time warp or a native inhabitant of the past, possesses a distinct background story that informs their role in the conflict against Gargos.

Rare was a prominent second-party developer for Nintendo, and produced the Killer Instinct series exclusively for the company as their response to Mortal Kombat. Following the success of the 1995 Killer Instinct port for the Super Nintendo home console, Rare began a sequel for the same console. They transitioned development to the Nintendo 64 upon its announcement. Gold was scheduled as a launch title for the new console but was delayed until its North American release in November 1996. It received a wider release in May 1997. It was also included in Rare's 2015 Xbox One retrospective compilation, Rare Replay.
