This 1998 main game is a fast-paced, side-scrolling shooter platformer where you chase the villain Devan Shell across time to recover a stolen ring. Gameplay centers on mastering fluid movement, precise jumping, and utilizing varied weaponry to clear intricate 2D levels. A key feature is the selection of playable characters—Jazz, Spaz, and Lori—offering slightly different traversal styles in this high-energy action experience.
The gameplay loop involves traversing intricate 2D environments, utilizing an arsenal of distinct weaponry to dispatch a wide variety of enemies. Players must master momentum and aerial control to reach hidden areas and collectibles scattered throughout each stage. Health management and weapon selection are key tactical considerations as players progress through the game's numerous challenges. The genres defining this experience are Platform and Shooter.
A notable feature of this sequel is the introduction of multiple playable characters, expanding replayability and offering slightly varied approaches to level traversal and combat. In addition to the titular protagonist, players can take control of his brother, Spaz, and in later iterations, his sister, Lori, each contributing to the overall adventure.
The narrative sets the stage for an urgent pursuit across different timelines. The central conflict revolves around the main hero chasing the antagonist, Devan Shell, who has stolen a significant item—a ring intended for a wedding proposal to Eva. This chase forms the backdrop for the platforming and shooting action across the game's various worlds.
The game blends the demanding precision of classic platforming with the constant offensive pressure of a run-and-gun shooter. Its unique appeal lies in its vibrant, cartoonish aesthetic combined with surprisingly deep level design and high-speed gameplay that rewards mastery of movement mechanics.
As a main title, this game does not feature any officially released downloadable content (DLC) or standalone expansions. The experience is self-contained within the base game released in 1998, though it does include a standalone expansion released separately.

The Secret Files contains Jazz Jackrabbit 2 and an additional separate episode. It features nine new levels containing new textures, and enables the player to control a third character, Lori. In almost each level there are alternate routes that the player can take. If players complete the nine levels they may try their luck in twenty other levels that were created by fans of the game, including the single-player level, "A sting in your tail!". Like the base game, this edition includes JCS, the Jazz Creation Station, where gamers have the opportunity to build their own levels.

Holidays Hare '98 is a standalone release. It contains an extra three single player levels, a new boss and additional multiplayer levels.
