As a classic Role-Playing Game originally released in 2000, Icewind Dale tasks you with leading a party of adventurers through the harsh, frozen north of the Forgotten Realms to stop an ancient evil. The core gameplay emphasizes tactical, real-time combat where you pause to issue precise commands to your group while exploring dangerous wilderness and ruins. This title is distinct for prioritizing intense dungeon crawling and party management over deep narrative choice. A remastered version is available for modern play on PC, iOS, and Mac.
The atmosphere of this title is defined by its unforgiving, icy environment. Players begin their journey in the small town of Easthaven, where a request from the local leader sends the party north toward the settlement of Kuldahar to investigate disturbing reports. This journey plunges the player deep into a territory teeming with merciless beasts and ancient mysteries, emphasizing survival against the elements as much as combat against monstrous foes.
As a primary entry in the CRPG genre, the gameplay loop revolves around party management, exploration, and tactical combat. Players create and control a full roster of adventurers, utilizing the ruleset of the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition. Combat occurs in real-time, but players have the ability to pause the action at any moment to issue precise commands to each party member, allowing for complex tactical maneuvers against overwhelming odds.
Character development is central, involving the selection of classes, races, and the allocation of statistics and skills that define combat effectiveness and utility outside of battle.
Unlike some other RPGs of its era that focused heavily on dialogue and narrative choice, this game prioritizes dungeon crawling and intense, party-based combat encounters. The focus is squarely on the challenges presented by the environment and the enemies within it, offering a more direct, action-oriented approach to the traditional tabletop experience translated into a digital format.
This main game features one official expansion pack that adds further content and challenges to the northern setting. While there have been no full remakes, a remastered edition has been released, updating the game for contemporary operating systems and often including quality-of-life improvements.
The game is accessible on PC via Microsoft Windows, as well as on mobile and desktop platforms through iOS and Mac.

Originally released in 2000, Icewind Dale is a Dungeons & Dragons game set in Wizards of The Coast's legendary Forgotten Realms. This Enhanced Edition allows players to experience the epic adventure on PC, Mac, Linux, iPad, iPhone, and Android tablets and phones, and includes a host of new features: • Swords and Sorcery: Discover dozens of new spells and items, including new magic armor and weapons. • Blackguards and Wizard Slayers: Select from over 30 new kits and classes to create the perfect adventuring party. • Bring A Friend: Join your fellow adventurers in cooperative, cross-platform multiplayer games. • See The Unseen: Explore quest content cut from the original game, now finished and restored. • More to Experience: Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition includes both the Heart of Winter and Trials of the Luremaster expansion packs.

Heart of Winter is an expansion pack to Icewind Dale, and allows your characters to continue their adventures in the snow-swept north of the Forgotten Realms campaign setting. Using Bioware’s Infinity engine and the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons rules, Black Isle Studios has expanded the northern reaches of Icewind Dale, providing a whole host of new challenges for your characters, along with new spells, items, and enemies. Although Heart of Winter is an expansion pack, be warned: The dangers you face are greater than the ones in Icewind Dale, and the threat to the whole of the Forgotten Realms is even greater. So prepare yourselves... the North is in need of heroes once again.
