Haunted Castle, a main game first released in 1987, blends intense platforming with hack and slash combat mechanics, originally found in arcades and later on PlayStation 2. You play as Simon, who must storm a demon castle to rescue his bride, Serena, from Count Dracula. The core loop involves precise traversal and fighting numerous monsters across treacherous environments. Its defining feature is the demanding, arcade-style difficulty, requiring pattern recognition to survive the gothic horror setting.
The narrative begins peacefully, detailing a wedding celebration in a village where the legend of Count Dracula has long faded into myth. This tranquility is violently shattered when the dark lord awakens, descending upon the ceremony to abduct the bride, Serena. The player takes on the role of Simon, the groom, who must venture into the ominous, demon-guarded fortress to save his partner. The atmosphere is defined by its dark, foreboding castle environment, typical of classic horror-themed action games.
The gameplay loop is focused on navigating treacherous environments while engaging numerous monstrous foes. As a platformer, precise jumping and movement are essential for traversing the castle's complex layouts. The combat system leans heavily into the hack and slash/beat 'em up elements, requiring players to utilize their chosen weapon effectively against waves of enemies. Success relies on mastering timing for both traversal and combat encounters.
The defining characteristic of this game is its unforgiving difficulty, a hallmark of its arcade origins. Players must manage their approach through levels that often feature environmental hazards alongside enemy placement. While the game features a clear objective—reaching the final confrontation—the journey through the castle demands persistence and pattern recognition to overcome its challenges.
This main game package contains no additional downloadable content (DLC) or expansions. It has seen one official remake since its initial release, offering updated visuals or mechanics for modern audiences, though the core structure remains consistent with the original vision.
The original version was featured in arcades, and later iterations or ports were made available on the PlayStation 2 console.
