Front Mission 2 is a tactical role-playing game set in 2102, focusing on geopolitical conflict involving customizable mecha called Wanzers. The core gameplay involves turn-based, grid-based strategy where players manage unit deployment and combat across varied terrain. A distinctive feature is the ability to target and destroy specific enemy Wanzer components (arms, legs, body) to disable functionality, adding deep tactical depth to its serialized military narrative.
The story unfolds in the year 2102, twelve years after the events of the first installment. The setting centers on Alordesh (a region corresponding to modern-day Bangladesh), a member state of the Oceania Cooperative Union (OCU). Following periods of rapid industrialization fueled by conflict, Alordesh experiences economic decline, leading to significant anti-OCU sentiment and ultimately, a military coup d'état in 2102 aimed at securing independence.
Players follow the intertwined paths of three key individuals: Corporal Ash Faruk, Captain Thomas Norland, and intelligence officer Lisa Stanley. As the coup erupts, these characters and their respective military units—the Muddy Otters and Dull Stags—are thrust into the ensuing chaos, attempting to survive, evacuate, and uncover the larger forces manipulating the conflict, including the involvement of a mysterious third party and a device codenamed "FENRIR."
The gameplay centers on turn-based tactical combat played out on isometric maps. Success hinges on careful positioning and resource management within the Wanzer customization system.
Central to the experience is the management and modification of Wanzers. These mecha are highly customizable, allowing players to swap out individual components such as the body, arms, legs, backpack, and various weapons.
The game distinguishes itself through its focus on detailed component destruction in combat, forcing players to prioritize disabling specific enemy hardware rather than just reducing overall health. Furthermore, the narrative maintains a serialized continuity, building upon the established world and political landscape of the series, offering a mature, military-focused atmosphere.
This title is available on several platforms, including the original PlayStation, PlayStation Portable, and PlayStation 3. It is presented as a main entry in the series.
