As a tactical Role-Playing Game originally released in 2004, Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones tasks you with protecting Renais from the Grado Empire through grid-based, turn-based strategy. The core loop involves leveling up soldiers by gaining experience in battle, allowing them to promote into stronger classes. A distinctive feature is the Tower of Valni, an optional dungeon for continuous unit grinding, alongside a branching narrative structure that alters the path of your campaign.
The gameplay loop centers on turn-based strategy. Before each engagement, players must carefully position their units, considering terrain advantages, weapon types, and unit classes. During combat, movement and actions are executed in turns, requiring foresight to anticipate enemy movements and exploit weaknesses. A defining feature of this entry is the emphasis on unit growth; soldiers gain experience points through battle, allowing them to level up and promote into more powerful classes, fundamentally altering their combat roles.
A significant addition to the strategic depth in this specific installment is the introduction of the Tower of Valni. This optional, multi-level dungeon allows players to repeatedly engage in battles against various monsters. This feature provides a dedicated avenue for units to gain valuable experience and test different tactical approaches outside of the main story progression.
The narrative begins as the long-standing peace between nations is shattered by an unexpected invasion. Players take on the roles of protagonists caught in the conflict, forced to flee their homeland and seek allies to uncover the true motivations behind the sudden aggression. The story explores themes of loyalty, destiny, and the weight of leadership as the fate of the continent rests on the success of your military campaign.
This game distinguishes itself by offering a branching narrative structure. At certain points in the story, players are presented with choices that determine which path the adventure takes, leading to different maps, character recruitment opportunities, and story developments. This replayability factor ensures that subsequent playthroughs can offer a substantially different experience.
As a main title, this game does not feature any downloadable content (DLC) or official expansions. The core experience is self-contained. It was originally released for the Game Boy Advance and has since been made available on newer systems, including the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS via digital re-release programs.
Character customization is deep, utilizing a robust class promotion system. Units start in basic classes and can evolve into specialized roles upon reaching certain levels, unlocking new skills and stat distributions. Managing this roster effectively—ensuring each unit fills a necessary tactical niche—is vital for success against increasingly challenging enemy forces.

An Unexpected Caller is a group hack using the Telephone format, seen previously in Call of the Armor, Bells of Byelen, and Embers Entwined. Those hacks stand out in large part due to their varied, unique characters and interesting custom maps. This hack features neither of those. The premise of this hack is simple. Make an entirely custom campaign, only using the maps and characters from the vanilla GBA games. While initially meant to be a short, lower effort hack after most of the team had just finished their work on Bells of Byelen, this project still ended up being a significantly longer endeavour than Call of the Armor, which we hope shows.
