This is the foundational Main Game in the Fire Emblem series, first released in 1990, blending Role-playing, Strategy, and Turn-based strategy mechanics. You guide Prince Marth across Archanea to reclaim his throne from the Shadow Dragon Medeus, requiring you to find the sacred Falchion sword and the Fire Emblem. The core loop involves tactical, grid-based combat where careful unit positioning is crucial, distinguished by the permanent removal (permadeath) of any unit that falls in battle. Recent accessibility includes localized digital versions on modern platforms.
The adventure unfolds across the continent of Archanea, where the player assumes the role of Marth, the exiled prince of Altea. Following a devastating invasion by the neighboring kingdom of Dolhr, Marth is forced into hiding. His father is killed, and his sister is taken hostage by the malevolent priest Gharnef. To restore his kingdom and seek justice, Marth must gather allies, locate the legendary sacred sword, the Falchion, and secure the titular artifact—the Fire Emblem—which is necessary to wield it. The ultimate goal is confronting the resurrected Shadow Dragon, Medeus.
The gameplay centers on grid-based, turn-based strategy. Battles take place on detailed maps where players maneuver their army, consisting of various character classes, against enemy forces. Success hinges on careful positioning, understanding unit strengths and weaknesses (the weapon triangle system), and managing character growth through experience points gained in combat.
A defining feature of this entry is its unforgiving nature; when a unit falls in battle, they are permanently removed from the game. This mechanic places a high premium on tactical foresight and resource management throughout the campaign. Players must utilize a diverse roster of characters, each possessing unique skills and proficiencies, to overcome increasingly difficult strategic scenarios.
This title is significant as the very first installment of its genre-defining series. It introduced the concept of permadeath for playable units, a core element that demands strategic commitment from the player. Furthermore, the game features a limited selection of content, offering a pure, focused strategic experience without additional downloadable content or expansions.
While originally a Japanese exclusive on the Famicom, this seminal work has seen limited accessibility internationally. It has been made available on platforms such as the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS through digital re-releases. A notable recent release for the Nintendo Switch provided a localized version of the original experience, though it remains fundamentally the same core game released in 1990.
There are currently no official downloadable content packs or expansions available for this main game title. The focus remains entirely on the original campaign structure.
