Final Fantasy XI Online is a pioneering MMORPG, first released in 2002, notable for being the first cross-console title supporting PC, PS2, and Xbox 360 players. The core gameplay loop centers on creating a customizable character, exploring the world of Vana'diel, and engaging in real-time combat that emphasizes cooperative group play ("Parties") to level up and complete missions. Its longevity is supported by numerous major expansions that continually add content to this shared online adventure.
This title represents the franchise's inaugural foray into the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) space. Released in 2002, it established itself as a pioneering title by being the world's first cross-console MMORPG, connecting players across PC, PlayStation 2, and Xbox 360 platforms. Players are invited to explore the expansive world of Vana'diel, where the narrative focus shifts from a singular hero to a collective adventure undertaken with others.
The core experience revolves around character customization and collaborative progression. Instead of a solitary journey, success hinges on forming "Parties" with other adventurers. Within these groups, players contribute unique class skills to overcome formidable challenges, earning experience points necessary for leveling up. The combat system is dynamic, featuring real-time action that evolved the franchise's established Active Time Battle (ATB) mechanics.
The primary loop involves exploration, quest completion, and cooperative combat. Players create and develop personalized avatars, choosing from various jobs and classes that define their role within a party structure. Progression is inherently social; tackling high-level content and earning significant experience points necessitates coordinated teamwork against powerful enemies.
The game is distinguished by its pioneering cross-platform functionality, allowing players on different hardware ecosystems to interact within the same persistent world. Furthermore, the depth of its content is substantial, supported by a significant number of major additions over its lifespan.
The game has received six major expansions since its initial launch, significantly broadening the world, story, and available content for long-term engagement.
As a long-running service title, the game's scope has been dramatically increased through its substantial expansion packs. While there are no standalone downloadable content packs listed, the longevity and breadth of the world have been secured through these major content additions. The core experience has also seen one full remake iteration, ensuring the foundational elements remain accessible.
The core game is available on PC (Microsoft Windows), Xbox 360, and PlayStation 2.

According to IGN's article, Nexon and Square Enix "decided the mobile version didn't meet the creative standards Final Fantasy fans have come to expect from the series".
