This 2003 Role-playing Adventure game continues the story of Spira two years later, following Yuna, Rikku, and Paine as sphere hunters resolving political turmoil. Gameplay centers on a chapter-based structure allowing early world access and features an all-female cast utilizing the dynamic Dressphere system to swap combat roles mid-battle. It revives the Active Time Battle system, offering tactical, real-time decision-making in combat.
The narrative centers on Yuna, who is now part of an airship-based sphere hunting organization called the Gullwings, alongside companions Rikku and Paine. Yuna’s primary motivation is tracking down mysterious spheres that may hold clues about the fate of Tidus. As the Gullwings investigate these artifacts, they become deeply involved in escalating political conflicts threatening to plunge Spira into a new war, forcing them to uncover secrets from Spira's ancient past.
A unique aspect of the game structure is its chapter-based system. Players have access to nearly all locations on the world map early in the game via the Gullwings' airship, the Celsius. This allows for significant non-linear exploration, enabling players to undertake numerous sidequests and minigames within a chapter before advancing the main storyline to the next segment.
The game introduces significant mechanical shifts from its predecessor. Most notably, it features an entirely female playable cast, a first for the main series. Furthermore, it revives and adapts the job system, which was absent in the previous installment.
Combat and character customization revolve around the Dressphere system. Instead of traditional fixed classes, a Dressphere determines a character's abilities, stats, and available skills. Party members can dynamically switch between any equipped Dressphere within their personal Garment Grid during battle. This mechanic allows for rapid adaptation to various opponents and tactical situations by swapping roles on the fly.
The battle system returns to the Active Time Battle (ATB) system, which was not utilized in the preceding title. This system requires players to manage a time gauge for character actions, adding a layer of real-time decision-making to combat encounters.
This title is presented as a complete main game experience. There are currently no official downloadable content packs or expansions associated with this release.
